Against my better judgement, I want to defend the first encounter between Terranort & the Guardians in the Keyblade Graveyard.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:27 PM PDT

TL;DR: Xehanort wanted an easy way to defeat the Guardians. He scared them into rushing their preparations for the final battle. When they got there he overwhelmed them with Terranort, the Demon Tide & 1000s upon 1000s of enemies. Terranort was the perfect seeker to emotionally manipulate the Guardians by seeing a friend they didn't want to destroy while also overwhelming them with his vast amount of power. With all that in mind the ones who weren't being targeted emotionally had to be very careful with how they approached fighting & countering him, especially when he intentionally took some cheap shots by targeting some of the weaker Guardians in the group.

So, a lot of people have issues with the scene between Terranort & the Guardians in the Keyblade Graveyard and I honestly don't blame them since the composition of the scene makes a lot of characters appear to be incompetent. This isn't meant to convince people that the scene was brilliant or anything as the flaws of it are very, very apparent, and liking the scene is most definitely a very unpopular opinion. But to play Devil's advocate and offer some food for thought, I personally have to give Xehanort a lot of credit for how he was essentially going to cheat his way through the clash between the 7 Lights & 13 Darknesses, and the game provided many hints throughout KH3 to set up the Guardian's first blunder.

Part of Xehanort's plan with the Guardians of Light that he didn't disclose with them in the Sleeping Worlds was exactly how he going to do whatever it took to make the clash between the 7 & 13 as one-sided towards the Seekers of Darkness as possible. If it were up to him, the easiest route would obviously be for him to just kidnap the all the Princesses of Heart again (as he had tried once before) and avoid the risk of the Seekers potentially losing in combat entirely. Knowing that there could potentially be at least 7 combat-ready Keyblade wielders to oppose him by the time the new 7 hearts were all located, Xehanort was able to get the Guardians of Light to rush through all the preparation they needed by informing Sora that the 13 Darknesses were more than ready for the clash (having all 13 members and 2 reserves ready to go), meaning that they weren't going to wait for them to get their group together since they could just go straight for the Princesses. If anything, encountering Larxene in Arendelle and hearing what she said played perfectly into what Xehanort was hoping the Guardians would do, making this world and Larxene incredibly relevant to the story & the catalyst for the game's major events.

So, knowing this information, the guardians panicked and rushed to get their group together regardless of how ready they were for the battle. Sora had to rush the regaining of all of his ability potential, Kairi & Lea's training was cut short, and Aqua & Ven were given very little time to recover physically and mentally as well as not having enough time to process their emotions from their respective ordeals (especially in the case of Aqua). This left Riku & Mickey as the only ones who had enough time to potentially prepare and strategize how they were going to deal with each of the Darknesses that they were aware of. But the group as a whole were far, far from prepared when it was time for the actual clash to happen. And had they spent any more time preparing and continued to wait any longer, they'd put all of the Princesses at risk. So the Guardians had to meet at the fated place the minute Ven was recovered and it was actually very generous of Yen Sid to allow them time to recuperate for the remainder of that day given how little time they all had.

So out of all the explanations as to why what happened with Terranort & the Guardians happened, the biggest reason was because of how unprepared they were for what Xehanort potentially had planned for them when they arrived, which was to either wipe out or severely weaken all of them with the combined strength of Terranort, the Demon Tide, & 2 swarms of 1000 enemies before they even got the chance to face Xehanort himself. Which would have succeeded without fail had it not been for Chirithy, Namine, Lingering Will, The Lights of the Past, Yen Sid, Donald & Goofy assisting the 7 Guardians. Turns out, Young Eraqus' chess move wasn't consider cheating if Young Xehanort had been the one cheating the whole time. So consider those 7 the unofficial 7 Guardians of the 7 Guardians of Light.

With the plans for Xehanort's actual intention with the Graveyard encounter established, let's look at the actual confrontation itself. Out of any of the Seekers that Xehanort could have placed in front of the Guardians, Terra was a brilliant and perfect decision on his part. First of all, Terra-Xehanort is Strong. Very, very Strong. The strongest seeker in the group behind Master Xehanort himself. We've seen Ansem defeated completely in combat. And we have seen Xemnas taken down permanently too. But Terra-Xehanort is so powerful that with the exception of Zettaflare, every single time he is knocked down, he has always gotten back up (even in his Re:Mind solo fight against Sora & his final battle in the Keyblade Graveyard). To the point where defeating him in battle only seems to make him stronger every single time. Second of all, Terra-Xehanort's only defeats prior to the Zettaflare he took to the face were all due to the resistance of Terra's heart. But other than that, he got back up in Radiant Garden after fighting Lingering Will in BBS, and he was only defeated in his battle against Aqua due to Terra's will taking control. No one other than Terra (& Donald) had caused him to fall from battle through combat and not get back up completely.

Thirdly, Terra has a personal connection with at least 3 of the 7 Guardians, making him a prime seeker to foster any hesitation within the Guardians. Especially when Xehanort had him present himself as Terra to remind them who they risk losing if they engage in battle. That's why Xehanort tried his best to Nort the likes of Sora, Riku & Roxas so that he could have members that could cause any potential ensemble of Guardians to hold back on fighting them. It's also why Dark Riku was the one sent to face the Guardians right after Terranort. Once again, Xehanort was trying to appeal to the emotions of the Guardians to distract them but they knew better the second time around. But in the first blunder, the emotional manipulation plan definitely worked. Ventus was too pure to accept that Terra was too far possessed to hear his voice (as well as the initial shock he had since this was his first ever encounter with the evil version of his friend) and Aqua, despite having to fight Xehanort to get through to him, certainly didn't want to do anything permanent or irreversible to Terra either, which is something she makes very clear every time she talks about him in this game. Even in BBS, Aqua fought Terranort with no intention to completely end him, unlike her battle with Vanitas in Neverland. She just wanted to knock some sense into him. Riku was unfazed by seeing Terra again, but he's been know to show restraint and not let his emotions lead him to any rash decisions.

So now we're at the actual battle between the Guardians & Terra-Xehanort itself. Remember that the goal the Guardians had with Terra was to bring him back to their side. A fight against him in order to bring him back was inevitable but destroying Terra-Xehanort would destroy Terra as well. Therefore, the Guardians had to be very careful & hold back a certain amount of their strength so that defeating Terra-Xehanort wouldn't vanquish one of their allies/friends. It was a very delicate encounter as opposed to the ones with the other Darknesses. Basically, the strategy was to subdue Terranort but not to kill him.

Terranort also had a strategy of his own. Like the Demon Tide, his goal was to release and collect the Guardian's heart, to forge the Keyblade without the other seekers potentially risking defeat in a clash. To do that he made use of his extreme speed abilities to purposely target the weakest Guardians first: Ven (who was still in emotional shock), Lea (who was fighting his first ever adversary with a Keyblade instead of his usual weapon) & Kairi (who has the least practical combat experience out of any of the Guardians). And violently targeting these individuals would distract the other Guardians (Sora & Aqua) who were trying to aid their fallen friends. That's 5 of the 7 Guardians taken care of. Should also be noted that Aqua's PTSD has had an intense effect on her, and one could only imagine the distress that was going through her head when witness Ven on the brink of death before her very eyes. The only ones who weren't really affected by Xehanort's manipulation tactics were the more emotionally stable members: Riku, Mickey, Donald & Goofy, all who were able to plan in the heat of the moment or at least think & act rationally. With the exception of Donald who, despite saving everyone, was the one who screwed up the plan to actually bring Terra back home.

Regarding Riku & Mickey, the two of them are Keyblade Master not just in terms of abilities but in terms of strategizing too. They knew that recklessly approaching Terranort head on would put them at risk of being countered, which is why Sora got both knocked back & disarmed. So rather than them approaching Terranort head on, they were cautious and waited for Terranort to approach them. As proven by Xemnas vs Roxas & Xion, the Xehanorts have enough foresight to counter more than one Keyblade if they are prepared to. Should also be noted that Sora protecting Kairi with his body instead of his Keyblade was because he hadn't summoned it back yet. And by the time he would have been able to recall his Keyblade and run over to Kairi, Terranort's Keyblade would have most definitely struck Kairi down as far as Sora was aware, so there was no time left for him to lose. Kairi too could have potentially defended herself with her Keyblade but after what happened to Lea when he attempted to defend herself, it's unlikely that she would have been able to adequately protect herself.

All-in-all, given the fact that an essay had to be written to defend the Guardian's first blunder, it goes to show that the execution of the scene is still rather poor, but by offering some perspective on what I believe the scene's intentions were, I hope that people start to see the meticulous planning in the story that set this encounter up. And in a way, the Guardians being rushed to present themselves to the Seekers of Darkness while facing a couple of mis-steps along the way is kinda some nice meta-commentary on the expectations KH3 had to deal with from its development to its reception. But knowing Nomura, I wouldn't be surprised if it was all intentional.

[SPOILERS] [RANT] The Secret Ansem Rant

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:35 PM PDT

TL:DR; Don't read the Secret Ansem Reports immediately after you get them if you want to enjoy Kingdom Hearts II's story.

Forgive the brief bashing of a masterpiece, but I want this off my chest, as someone who got most of the Ansem Reports in KH 1 (didn't get 0 & 13):

In Kingdom Hearts 1, the Ansem Reports were a unique way to get inside the headspace of the main villain, Ansem. They explained how he discovered the heart of his world, created Emblem Heartless in his experiments, and became the BBEG of the game. They also were optional; the player didn't have to read them, but for a JRPG in 2002-2003 it was a unique way to learn more about the lore and villain.

Now, you're playing Kingdom Hearts II (doesn't matter if you played Chain of Memories or not) and you're having a moderate amount of fun: Sora's so much fun to play, the story is finally going somewhere, and suddenly Mickey shows up! You watch the cutscene, know where to go, and then the game tells you you've unlocked "Secret Ansem Report 2". Wait, hold on, Secret Ansem Report? There were more, and they're secret? Why? What could they hold that is so secret?

So, you decide to read them immediately. And you're immediately hit with "I have made a grave mistake." Uh, what? Mistake? You read on,

"My study of the "darkness of the heart" began with simple psychological tests, and quickly snowballed. Spurred by my youngest apprentice Ienzo, I constructed a massive laboratory at the basement of my castle."

Okay...so Ansem started small, then it grew into the Heartless swarm that went out of control.

"Unbenknowst to me, my six apprentices then began collecting a huge number of subjects on which to perform dangerous experiments into "the darkness of the heart." As soon as I found out, I called all my apprentices together and ordered them not only to cease their studies, but to destroy the results of their research thus far"

Wait, wait, wait: Ansem, the main bad guy from the first game, the self-proclaimed Seeker of Darkness, didn't want to perform those experiments? This is wildly out of character and contradicts all of the Ansem Reports way back in the first game. What is going on? Anyway, the other paragraphs convey the same idea that Ansem didn't want the experiments to continue, then how he met Mickey, whatever. You know this, you read the Ansem Reports from the first game, you know how this goes down, eventually he'll-

"That was when I discovered the "Ansem Reports". Though they bore my name, the only one I have written was number 0. Apparently he had gone on to pen 1 through 8 himself"

...wait. No, no, no. Hold on. Those weren't written by Ansem? But...no. You think "Is this telling me that the Ansem Reports, one of the ways we could understand Ansem, the neat and creative way to disperse lore and backstory at the player's pace, the most damning documentation of a man who became obsessed with darkness so much he convinced himself everything ends in darkness, wasn't written by Ansem, but some guy? Some assistant who was the one actually performing the experiments? That wasn't what Ansem really thought? Wait who's writing these, then: Ansem? The real Ansem? Oh no, are there more of these? There're more of these, aren't there? Oh no."

And it's like this with most of the Secret Ansem Reports the game gives you automatically. Most of the Secret Ansem Report blatantly hint at important information treated as shocking twists in the main story, especially Secret Ansem Report 7, ruining the impact of those plot twists that reference things as far back as the first game. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, read these reports when you get them because your enjoyment of the story will be severely hampered. I mean, what's a first-time player going to think if they read these when they get them?

Actually, do that. If you want to comment what your first time experience was reading the Secret Ansem Reports the first time you played Kingdom Hearts II (thru 2.5 or original, doesn't matter), feel free to do so. Maybe you had a different experience, and mine is just uniquely in its ambivalences.

    Difficulty

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:25 PM PDT

Why did no one warn me that this was gonna be the hardest game I've ever played in my life? I've beat Bloodborne front to back many times before, and Kingdom Heart: Re Chain of Memories beats it in difficulty hands down. I'm on the final boss (supposedly) Marluxia, and I just tried for 3 hours and I still can't beat him. I beat Orphan at this point man, come on.
