Booting up KH 3 and immediately turning it off.

2019 was a rough year for me. I was an Uber driver until I got into an accident (no one was hurt. Thank god because it was my fault I'm embarrassed to admit), lost my job, couldn't pay rent, and ended up selling my PlayStation 4 among with everything else a pawn shop would take. Even ended up living in my car for a month. A 10 month subscription to planet fitness was my life line. I've landed on my feet recently, and have actually been financially prosperous enough to buy an Xbox one (I really wanted to play the master chief collection). I knew kingdom hearts 3 was cross platform, and i was a major Kingdom Hearts fan. I played Kh, Chain of memories (on the game boy no less!), Kh2, birth by sleep, recoded, and watched all the cutscenes for DDD and 358/2 days. It had been years ago though, and I really lost track of the story. I barely understood it when I was a fan to be honest. Regardless, I just wanted to play KH 3, and decided I didn't care because the story is a mess anyways. The opening cutscene booted up, and immediately they were showing cutscenes from Birth By Sleep to a instrumental of the new theme song. I had to close it immediately. I forgot how much I cared about kingdom hearts, and it felt like cheating hopping into 3. I'm half way through BBS right now, and am going to watch or play every game, because even if the story is a condiluted mess, it matters to me.

So I've played through every single KH game's storyline (thanks to The Story So Far) EXCEPT for beating Ansem in KH1. Not even as a kid. So tonight, I finally beat him.

Poor Boss Design - A Rant

Poor Boss Design - A Rant

As with everyone here, I adore this series. Absolutely love it. However, it isn't without its flaws. Some of the main ones are specific boss fights. I'm gonna explore what, personally, I believe to be the WORST boss fights of each Kingdom Hearts game is from a gameplay design point, not a difficulty one. Just because a fight is hard, doesn't mean it isn't well choreographed.

Kingdom Hearts - PhantomThat's right, Starting with a superboss.

    https://preview.redd.it/5jlrbx3n4t151.png?width=618&format=png&auto=webp&s=d841cd3f0d50cf9ae9486ad595e9e6454c0f6bd7

Phantom is basically a young child's introduction to boss patterns. As a tutorial in this regard, that's decent, but as a super boss, something that is meant to annihilate players, it's the most dull and boring super boss in Kingdom Hearts, maybe the whole franchise. Hit red with Fire, blue with Blizzard, yellow with thunder, and attack white. Keep plenty of ethers on the team and turn Goofy into an MP battery. Seems fair enough, but the pattern is what makes this dull.

    1. Stop the clock
    2. Attack
    3. Go down to avoid the claw swipe
    4. Attack
    5. Go round the clock to avoid the projectile as it crashes
    6. Attack
    7. Go down to avoid the claw swipe
    8. Attack
    9. Go round the clock again, only this time, use Stop on it
    10. Loop for 10 minutes

    What a snooze fest.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories - Zexion

    https://preview.redd.it/l0j7f6a0qt151.png?width=390&format=png&auto=webp&s=5c4646624dc1f2078575f0e1eafa82a3a56ffb70

I have never enjoyed fights where the fight's gimmick is to remove the main mechanic/gimmick of the whole game. Zexion is the perfect example of this. Zexion loves nothing more than to steal your cards, then use your own sword against you. It can be difficult to avoid this, and if he gets you too much, you become defenceless. To be honest, as much as I dislike CoM's system, none of the bosses are necessarily truly poorly designed. I just remember Zexion vexing me the most, especially having just beaten a Darkside, and I had to pick one, so... Fun fact, in the GBA one, after the Darkside, Zexion is attacked by Riku in a cutscene (there is no fight), right before he retreats and is ended anyway.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days - Ruler of the Sky

    https://preview.redd.it/cdmu3otcat151.png?width=350&format=png&auto=webp&s=6b942afda61b3470e6dd894a52dd1969c1640b5b

OH MY FREAKING LORD, THIS BOSS IS ANNOYING. Here is a contender for one of the worst fights in the franchise. A flying Neverland boss, this thing flies in circles, shooting projectiles from its tail, whilst all you can do, as it never stops moving, is chase it down and do chip damage to its tail. Then it goes berserk and you have to avoid it. Cure and Cura are the only healing magic you want, as Curaga lays a healing zone rather than just healing, and Fira is better than Firaga as that is a short range, slow explosive. Honestly, gameplay is a massive problem for 358/2, and this boss is the epitome of it.

    Kingdom Hearts II - Jafar

To clarify, struggle bosses and Ursula specifically (as she is just a rhythm game) don't count as true bosses to me, so they weren't even considered, otherwise, it would straight up be Ursula.

    https://preview.redd.it/hn3pvz46ct151.png?width=208&format=png&auto=webp&s=01a58a90b512092b24d71aed81e04a321b5be1b4

Aside from the previously mentioned fights I am not counting for obvious reasons, Kingdom Hearts II lacks poor boss design. However, I had to make a choice. Jafar seems appropriate, just from being lackluster for a world revisit fight. Compared to the likes of Grim Reaper, Xaldin, Hades and Storm Rider, Jafar poses very little threat to the player. Avoid obstacles, hit belly, spin, hit head, repeat, albeit with more obstacles later on. Jafar has never been a tough fight in Kingdom Hearts II, and is the weakest non-minigame boss design wise, yet, he's still pretty good.

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep - Mysterious Figure

    https://preview.redd.it/t4e31etbdt151.png?width=350&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b8e0b6b7ff44932f30484d2c96435911bc63ec2

I bet you all guessed this would be here. Here we have the worst designed super boss, and maybe boss as a whole, in the whole franchise. He has a multitude of moves that can, mostly, be dealt with on their own. I say mostly because the only way to consistently deal with the lasers as Terra is to spam healing. However, he likes to combine his moves way too much, particularly problematic if he has his clones. He also has a mechanic that I already said I dislike, removing your gameplay mechanics, and scattering them. Eventually, he spends most of the remainder of the fight invisible, making lock on useless. Finally, he counters attacks by self-healing with his block. Worst part about this fight? The difficulty varies. With Aqua and Ven, due to insane i-frames, this guy is pretty easy, despite his problems. You just cheese him with rolls and surges. But with Terra, with Terra's poor i-frames and dodge riddled with end lag (i.e. lots of lag coming out of the move to prevent spamming it), this fight becomes quite RNG based. What can take 1 or 2 goes with Ven or Aqua can take hours with Terra unless you get lucky. Did I mention that this is also a fight against the camera?

Kingdom Hearts Coded - Dragon Maleficent

    https://preview.redd.it/nswj7eumit151.png?width=825&format=png&auto=webp&s=babf9f994f4963ab9156905ea553f2eb89bedf77

This fight is ruined by its gimmick. It's a 2D fight with none of your commands available, just attack. It's the same as Guard Armor, only Guard Armor has a gimmick with raining bug bricks getting in the way and a command to deal with them. Dragon Maleficent is a boss in both Kingdom Hearts and Birth By Sleep, and is fun in both. This fight is boring as hell.

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance - Chernabog

    https://preview.redd.it/exfuz5j2st151.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=693b869a291f6dd42d17891933db390ce94ffa7a

I was originally going to put Ansem 2 here for the blowing back corridor parts of the fight which are there with no purpose to drag it out, but then I remembered how much I think the dropping bosses suck, and none disappoint me more than Chernabog. In Kingdom Hearts, Chernabog is a phenomenal fight, a flying one at that, too, but in DDD, he's underwhelming and boring. Avoid his attacks and hit him 3 times, the classic old school boss trope. What an absolute let down for something so epic in visual design and something that was awesome to fight in the original game.

Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep: A Fragmentary Passage - Darkside

    https://preview.redd.it/xohcbeycmt151.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=8bac56657d25a574b1cd1856b26d896e8e5414e8

Honestly, 0.2 doesn't give much choice for bosses, so this gets picked, just for being yet another Darkside. The series has enough of them.

Kingdom Hearts III - Dark Baymax

    https://preview.redd.it/k0npjnrdpt151.png?width=442&format=png&auto=webp&s=4e74e430b16cae31664e892a1b9985518610ffd8

I very nearly picked Darkside again, but felt that was a cop out. Then, I debated choosing Lump of Horror or Sköll just because they annoyed me, but then I thought to the group of gimmicky bosses from The Caribbean, which made me think of the flying boss, and in turn, that made me think of this fight. You spend the first half flying, dodging, shooting, and kicking projectiles, and this all culminates in a 1v1 between the Baymaxes, a fight I was looking forward since they first revealed the art of the fight, long, long ago, and honestly, this boss joins the list for being perhaps the most disappointing boss of the game. Shame, considering the Osaka team did a pretty good job, despite all of the initial concerns.

Obviously, these are just my opinions. I know many other bosses vex people (Riku VS Trickmaster in CoM because of his Wonderland deck and Anti-Black Coat Nightmare in DDD come to mind), so I'd like to read your opinions as to who you think are poorly designed fights (remember, this isn't based on difficulty) and why.

Can we just appreciate how much of a badass Sora really is?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 05:50 PM PDT

So I looked into it just now, and someone did amazing work analyzing this. I'll post the link I found because this guy quite frankly did an amazing job. All credit goes to Kirito352 on Deviantart for this

But holy shit, Sora you fucking madman

And they keep nerfing him at the start of every game. I get it and LVL 1 Sora from KH1 doesn't hold up to LVL 1 from KH3 but God damn he has come a long way.

Is KH1 supposed to feel sluggish?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 08:44 PM PDT

Maybe I'm used to playing faster games but Sora seems to do everything at the speed of a snail. Is there a way I can increase this speed or am I stuck with this slowness?

Does beating Yozora on beginner still unlock the trophy?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 07:04 PM PDT

Okay, so I'm at my wit's end here. I have been fighting Yozora all day and I can't seem to get it down. I've watched all the videos, studied attacks, even tried cheesing it with Ariel. I'm kinda done with it.

I'm not above beating the whole game and dlc again on beginner mode if it means Yozora will be easier, but I want to make sure I can unlock the trophy still.

I just want to make sure I can still get the trophy if I'm on beginner difficulty. If not, I'll just keep at it and eventually get there but I'd rather save my sanity and just spend a weekend powering through the game again. Thanks!!

I am not very optimistic about this potential Disney Plus show

    Posted: 29 May 2020 05:44 PM PDT

Hate me all you want, but I do not trust Disney to handle this. If it's going on their streaming service I'm positive the show will be more childish not geared to the current fanbase. I do not expect this to tell the union x story or something new. I'm expecting a retelling of KH1. There's no way they won't focus on Sora, Donald, and Goofy. They will bring in the most viewers unfortunately.

Maybe I'm too negative, but I'm expecting another Teen Titans Go.

    Question About Pro Codes

    Posted: 29 May 2020 08:29 PM PDT

Does having the codes off during gameplay outside of bosses effect the Pro Codes Merits? ^ I've started my save file with them on today and I'm curious about the details of the challenge.
