Almost 40 first time playing series my impressions so far. Posted: 28 Aug 2020 06:30 PM PDT I don't know if anyone is really interested in what an older person who never played this series thinks but thought I'd post a few of my feelings so far. This might just be a vomit of text so apologies for my writing style. I knew of the games but was basically blind coming in. I had also heard about how confusing the plot was but short of that I never really bothered following any coverage of the series. So when I had the opportunity to get the "all 4 one" package on sale I thought it may be fun for my 11 year old daughter and I to play together (Covid is happening we have plenty of time together). And it's a Disney kids game she should love it! We played the first island and she checked out, the controls were terrible, the world seemed bland even compared to other PS2 games. And the story atleast at first was lacking, characters didn't have personality. My daughter could not have cared less for the game. So much for a fun adventure in some Disney games. A few weeks later out of boredom I thought I'd throw it back on and give it another shot alone. And despite some low points I've finally beaten the first game, CoM/Rikus story and am now working my way through 2. Here are my quick thoughts: Kingdom Hearts -- Feels pretty dated, the worlds seemed lifeless, exploration was a bit lack luster and controls were stiff. Judging it based on the time it was probably really cool seeing these blending of series but I think that was as ambitious as they got. Story did pick up a bit during the end though. I skipped the optional Olympus fights and didn't bother synthing anything. I knew this would be a hard game to enjoy but something kept calling me back to play and I have to say it won me over enough to want to continue. Feelings after I finished were thinking world design is a little bland but I hope things get more interesting. It was a good first crack at a series especially for PS2. CoM Sora-- at first I hated this combat system and could not figure out what I was supposed to be doing. After the first couple of hours though I really enjoyed designing the dungeons and building decks. Rehashing the first story was a bit tedious but it was a GBA game so I'll give it a pass. Same for world design the areas just feel like boxes not actual spaces atleast it works in this context. Story is actually pretty fun though, I really enjoyed it. I'd say this is a much better attempt at story and characters then the first game. Boss battles are a great challenge can be frustrating near the end but it really felt rewarding to beat. By the end I was done though and ready to move on to KH2 but... CoM Riku-- was not expecting a second game, at first just booted it up to see what it was. Seems like a new story guess I'm playing it! Combat started alot quicker Riku is a badass and the levels seem like there is no point in exploring should be a quick mindless playthrough. Fired up some podcasts and played...suddenly things are getting harder. Story is getting interesting though and I don't want to quit. I have no idea what I am doing and my decks are not customizable. At this point I am mashing my way through combat with boss battles being largely lacking strategy wise, frustration has set in. Bosses either kill me or I manage to mash my way past them I am not mixing it up. Wonderland is a mess the lack of cards sucks so bad at this point I really want to quit but I only have 1 world left. End bosses are a pain in the ass. I managed to figure out things a little but the bosses seemed largely based on luck rather then strategy. I beat it and am ready for KH2! But... 358/2 days-- I've read this is actually supposed to be played after 2. I hope that's right because I want to play what's considered the best so I can decide if the series is worth continuing KH2 so far-- clock just ticked over to 9 hours played I just finished Olympus for the first time. This game has sold me on the series officially. If it was just another KH1 I think I'd call it and be done... but it's amazing! This feels like the evolution I wanted. World's are interesting to explore, art is ambitious and gorgeous. Everything is just on point so far, story is fun and silly in a way I really love. I'm even having fun with the gummy ship. It's hitting on all levels, combat is way more fluid as well. I'm just impressed for such an old game. I realize I'm only early on and it's the high point of the series for alot of people but it sold me. I think I'm in for the long run at this point I am invested enough in the story that I want to see it through. Sorry for the scatter shot of thoughts, I just needed to get some out of me as a I was playing. If I stick with it an people are interested I'll post some more in the next few games.
