I’d like to believe that Sora coming to the rescue in the Keyblade Graveyard was less about him trying to hog the spotlight & more of him returning the favor for all the times his friends have rescued him the past.

Man, f*** these mobile games, for real.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 08:49 PM PST

It's so bullshit that these mobile games exist, and have story and lore relevance.

I'm not playing your shitty mobile game, especially when I have to catch up to damn near 1000 quests where the story is probably so stretched thing you could covey it all in 1/4th the amount of time it'd take to play the quests.

I'm glad Everglow made the KH timeline videos for Unchained χ, that he did, but I hope he or someone else makes similar videos for all of Union X and eventually Dark Road, because f*** that noise.

Is Hype Culture Starting to Damage KH Discourse?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 06:33 PM PST

Honestly, I didn't think I wanted to put out a post like this or had enough to say on such a matter. But after some of the reactions I have been seeing with MoM so far (which I will try not to make it engulf the discussion of this topic too much), plus with all the KH Content that has been released for a good couple of years, with Kingdom Hearts III feeling like the boiling point of it all, I am just wondering how much did hype culture affect the discourse for the series as whole, or at least new entries.

Now, in saying this, I know many will be thinking, "But actually there is more to it than that," to which I say, yes. Yes there is. I am not saying Hype Culture is the only thing hurting discourse of the series. There are many contributing factors to this ever-growing problem of some of the discourse being outright awful at times. What I am trying to say is that it is a large part of the issue. Also, if you are genuinely disappointed in something, if you are frustrated for genuine reasons, if you feel upset about something, that is fine. This is not towards the more rational people. This is mostly focusing on some of the more irrational things I have been seeing over the last few years happen time and time again.

But anyways, with the release of Kingdom Hearts III, regardless on any stance you have with the game, I do honestly feel like with that game, some of what hurt it for many is just simply all the anticipation surrounding it, which in of itself created a ton of unrealistic expectations that in some cases were almost never even gonna be close to possible with everything riding on it and it's success. I was seeing so many people have so many unrealistic expectations that they said MUST be in the game that it was honestly a bit overwhelming. To a point to when those things didn't happen, people got pissed off those unrealistic things didn't happen, even when it felt more obvious that the game wasn't gonna have that in it. But expectations are just a tip of the iceberg. There was also people saying things along the lines of, "This game is definitely gonna be this type of KH game," or "This game is gonna end like this." Not in a prediction sort of way, no I mean like in a literal, "This is how it is going to go down cause I want it to go down like this and therefore it is going to go down like this," even though that kind of mindset is basically just begging for those statements to blow up in your face.

It isn't even just with KHIII though. For Melody of Memory, people are saying things like, "Oh, get ready for the game to eventually become like traditional Kingdom Hearts Gameplay at some point," even though nothing in the advertising, trailers, interviews, and gameplay has suggested such a thing, which would be jarring as hell for the game to be like, BAM! Goodbye rhythm gameplay. Here is the command menu, magic, keyblade transformations, and all that shit. Like this is both unrealistic to think this and also feels more like something that you say you "expect" when really it is something you want. I don't mind hype culture as a whole. It can feel awesome to be a part of a community who is equally as hype, anxious, and ready for a new release of a certain new thing or a new entry for any established IP. But some people have let this consume them to a point where it can be excessive and make it more likely to set yourself up for both disappointment and frustration. You can't always blame the game or the product for having.

There is also the people who are so into the hype train that when they try to defend the product they spend so much time hyping up, they start to become very vitriolic, rude, or sometimes at worst, so aggressive that it borderlines bullying or harassment when people are understandably frustrated and disappointed. It isn't just the people who are screaming their anger for the whole world to hear with both no filter nor any consideration that is a part of the problem. It can also work inverse for the people so willing to go to bat for something to the point of calling anyone with criticisms "haters" or awful, similar to the defenders who get called "shills" or "sheep" for the product, creators, company, etc,.

That is just with the aftermath of when hype culture can absolutely cause some ugly arguments and fights. During the hype cycle though, for many people, it can be that where it can be the worst, to where any concerns are handwaved as nitpicking and that you should chill the hell out and enjoy it, and anyone so hyped is brought down and told to shut up and go away and stop praising or getting excited over "inevitable fuck ups and failures in the making." All the behaviors I have mentioned and so much more should not be excepted as the norm nor should be what discourse in the community devolve into, or really any debate in general, cause so many fans can be awesome, chill, people who just love this series, this community, these characters, and so much more.

I worry that this will be a continuing pattern though. From things like how much or how little story content is in a game, to the gameplay style, to some character choices, to direction, or just how we hype or anything being a constant for the hype culture for this franchise and how it will end up with more fighting, more disappointment, and more harm than good. Imagine if when the next game comes out or is announced, we start seeing people say, "Why are you even following this series anymore you idiot? I jumped ship a while ago and you should as well."

I probably didn't get to all of the nitty gritty of things, but I just wanted to point and discuss some of the main things I have seen over the last few years. If you have any stories of hype culture for this series being as damaging for you as it sometimes is for me (to the point where I almost am afraid to get into it sometimes), or how the hype culture actually isn't damaging or helped you out, or just any thoughts on what I have said, I wanna know. This is a topic that has been boiling over my head for at least a year now but after MoM came out, it was the final straw for me that made me make this.

Finally, if you experienced any horrible discourse or some stuff like what I have mentioned, I wanna say this:
I'm so sorry that it happened to you. You don't deserve to have that happen to you or anyone. I hope that things are getting better for you. Don't let those bad experiences of the past ruin how you feel on the series, these characters, how you debate on Kingdom Hearts as a whole, or how you are as a person. Hype responsibly, but don't let anyone bring you down if you have your doubts or are excited for something. We all deserve to be treated fair and so do you.

    Just synthesized my first Ultima!!

    Just synthesized my first Ultima!!

41 hours of KH2 (PS2 version). First time I played this game was around 2009 when I was 7 y/o. Now I'm 18 and finally dedicated to not only play but strive on it too ('cause I was way too young to understand synthesis), it's still one of my favorite games of all time. I'm really proud of myself now.
    I did it!
