Advice for Melody of Memory, From a Guy That Played Too Much Guitar Hero Growing Up

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 03:25 PM PST

So I played a ton of Guitar Hero as a teen and I thought I would share some of the tips that apply to this game. I'm sure quite a few people are new to the rhythm genre since this is Kingdom Heart's first dive into it, so I thought I'd share some advice based on my experience with Guitar Hero.

First, you should spend some time making adjustments to the settings. The settings in this game allow you to adjust the timing of the notes since TVs will have different amounts of lag. On top of this, you can also add more optional buttons for hitting notes. Personally, I recommend allowing yourself to use the D-Pad since it's nice to have a fourth attack option as needed.

When you're playing songs, you can quickly get overwhelmed by the enemies on screen. However, this game does a great job of giving you hints about upcoming enemies. Not only do you have the highway that shows you upcoming Heartless, but you will also notice enemies running up the screen to the back. If you see two or three running back at once, then you will know that you have to hit two or three attack buttons at the same time in a bit.

Also, DO NOT LOOK AT THE CHARACTERS. This may seem strange, but your character models don't indicate when you need to hit notes. Instead, if you struggle with timing, you should focus on the lock-on icons for enemies. In actuality, your party is just there for visual appeal, so there's no need to focus on them. Keep your eyes on the enemies and any that may start creeping up.

You should also get into the habit of alternating attack buttons. When you play on Beginner, it won't be as much of an issue. However, some of the harder songs on Standard and most of the songs on Proud will be easier if you alternate attacks between notes. I recommend alternating your thumbs or the triggers depending on your preference.

If you know a multi-hit ability crystal is coming up in a song, you should attack with the triggers. This way, your thumb will be ready to hit the reaction command when it pops up. The same principle applies during flying sections. Use your right thumb to hold the jump button, control movement with your left thumb and use your triggers for attacking. Also, if you struggle with flying and attacking at the same time, then you can ignore the flying notes. While they will affect your chain, they won't damage you, so you should focus on the enemies if you struggle to pass songs.

If you plan to work on a hard song, make sure you do some hand warmers first. You can do this by either doing hand exercises or you can play an easier song first. If your fingers or hands start to hurt, then you need to take a break. Not only could you damage your hands if you do this too much, but you won't play as well if you have sore hands.

Feel free to post other tips if I forgot to cover anything.

TL;DR Adjust your settings, pay attention to the enemies and visual cues, don't look at your party members, alternate attack buttons, use the attack triggers, ignore flying notes if needed, warm up your hands, and take breaks when your hands hurt.
