Kingdom Hearts 3 Remind: Theory Regarding MoM's "Name"

    Posted: 09 Mar 2020 08:31 PM PDT

So I was rewatching the scene with MoM (Master of Masters) and Xehanort, and during it, I noticed something that just made me feel like something was off.

First, before I actually say what my theory is, I want to bring up the moment that originally set me on to this crazy line of thinking: After the flashback, we see present Xehanort, and Xigbar asks him what he's thinking about. He tells them about the encounter with the MoM, but then he says "I never learned who he was, and perhaps I never will" . . . Wait, what? But didn't the MoM tell him his name and that he was a lost master? Or at least it should be his actual name, considering it was cut out for us not to be able to hear it. And I don't think Xehanort was lying about that part, because he didn't even have to say that at all, he could've just talked about the encounter and not mentioned anything about who it was, why bring it up only to lie about it shortly after?.

Which leads me to my theory. I actually think the name cutout was not just on our end, but was actually in-universe and Xehanort actually never heard a name, the same as us. As if the MoM's name literally can't be said.

For example, Xehanort would actually be reacting not to the MoM's name, but his LACK of a name, and possibly realizing the implications of that (which I'll try to get into).

And remember, Xehanort actually reacted to the "name" (or lack thereof), so if MoM actually did say his name and Xehanort heard it, his reaction would have to be that he recognizes the name in some way, yet it's the "lost master" part that he latches on to? Doesn't really make much sense.

Of course this just leads me into a lot of implications of the story if this is true. There is only one other point in the series where something like this happens. The prologue of KH2, where words are literally unspeakable during that one day. We're not given the specifics of why they lost those words, other than the nobodies took those things, but we have to assume it has a lot to do with the virtual nature of that Twilight Town. Which if my theory were true, it would mean the world that they are in right now is virtual (at least to some extent, if not completely) and something similar happened to the MoM to where he can't say his name anymore.

There have been a lot of questions lately in the series as to what's real, and what's not. Union Cross is at a very interesting point where they are questioning if they are in the real world or another virtual world. And this technology/magic is so advanced that no one can tell the difference between them, for example in Re:Coded, Mickey and the others didn't even realize they were brought into a virtual world until they were told what was going on. A lot of this virtual stuff is being brought into the forefront, and I think it's leading up to this revelation: that the world we've known up to now (or at the very least, most of it), is all virtual. It's even possible this "time travel" that's been going on, is actually something else entirely.

I think the ReMind ending sums it up nicely.

"I've been having these weird thoughts lately.

Like, is any of this for real, or not?

None of this . . . makes sense to me."
