I finally did it... I beat the Phantom for the first time!

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:25 PM PST

That fight was a lot easier than I expected. The last time I played KH1 was when it came out on PS3 for the first time. I couldn't beat a single secret boss and now I've just beaten my first one. I stocked Peter and Goofy with Ether as well as myself of course and I almost immediately lost Peter to the clock. I quickly got accustomed to the clock mechanic and did not lose Goofy who was vital to my victory. I kept casting, I had Stopra, Thundaga, and Blizzaga marked to my shortcuts because I knew I could access Firaga instantly. The Phantom kept getting out of reach for my physical blows and smacking me around which put me to near death more times than I thought would happen. Funny thing, I completely forgot he attacked, I thought he just floated around.

Anyway, I got him into the green and was so close to beating him when I ran out of MP. I had used up all of my ethers and was hoping that the next orb color would be 3 straight whites which was what I needed to win. That did not happen. Luckily, that's when Goofy came in with an ether and I casted two spells, finishing him with Firaga. This was on my first try, I could not believe it.

Seriously, what were they thinking? It's way too much for the start price.

Played/Watched through the entire Kingdom Hearts saga for the first time in the last two months. What a ride. What a crazy, crazy ride.

What the title says. After many years of hearing about it, I finally took the dive and decided to check out the series, and so I picked up the "Story so Far" compilation and Kingdom Hearts 3.

Man, what a journey. So many worlds, so many characters, so many increasingly convoluted twists and reveals. All grounded in weirdly abstract meditations on love, existence and the nature of our reality.

    And Disney.

This series is weird but I've come to love it so much. Some games more than others, and some I just watched cutscene compilations for, but it was all part of the journey.

And now, I've finally come to the end of that journey and finished Kingdom Hearts 3. In addition, I've also watched the cutscenes for Re:Mind (I can't justify that price tag for 4 hours of content) and Melody of Memory (I have no interest in a rhythm game).

What a wild ride this has been and what an incredible game to finish out on. I've heard that some people were disappointed in KH3 from a narrative standpoint but I'm sorry, I have to disagree. So many fist-pump worthy moments, so many great payoffs, so many plot threads brought together and so many characters reunited. Was it pure fanservice? Absolutely, but after going through this insane journey I was in the perfect mindset to appreciate it.

My only real complaint is that it's probably a bit too easy (KH I+II endgames were crushing by comparison) and I do wish some parts of Re:Mind had been included in the base game.

I'd like to give more detailed thoughts on the other games too but at this point, it's all blurring together. Plus, there are just so many.

Of course, it's not really the end. One journey's close is another beginning. The stage has already been set for what comes next and I for one am very excited. Even if I suspect the next instalment is a good few years out.

Until then, may your heart be your guiding key.

You know, that classic phrase they say in every game and totally wasn't made up for KHIII. Iconic.
