I made a Google Doc that looks into the history of Square Enix’s relationship with Disney & Pixar throughout the development of the KH franchise.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 01:44 PM PST

Here is the Google Doc but I suppose you can consider this post sort of a TL;DR version of it.

Most Kingdom Hearts fan understand that every entry in the franchise is a Disney game through & through, both visually & legally. But there's always the occasional discussion of having an entry that tones back the Disney aspect of the series or even cut it out entirely. Wanting more focus on the original content of KH is completely understandable due to how much the OCs resonate with the majority of fans & because some people lean more into the Square Enix elements than they do the Disney ones. But a lot of people aren't aware of how deeply ingrained Disney is to not just the series's identity, but also in its developmental influence & decisions overall. This often leads to misconceptions about how strong of a hold Disney has on the creative decisions of the series & creates these ideas of Disney enforcing their own wants & desires onto the series with an iron grip over those of Nomura.

While I won't deny that Disney is an evil mega corporation bent on world-domination, their approach to Kingdom Heart's development has been rather creator friendly for Nomura & his team. Yes they do have an extensive list of guidelines for how their properties are meant to be portrayed, but in terms of working on a collaborative effort with another developer, these given guidelines are all pretty reasonable & standard stuff. And any instance where it appears that Disney got in the way of a potential creative idea for the games, it more often than not turns out to actually be Nomura's own intuition on what he thinks these Disney characters/world should or shouldn't do/be, given his many years of experience & trust building with the other creatives at Disney Interactive & Disney Japan.

Wanting to have a more comprehensive overview of what Disney has contributed to Kingdom Hearts overall, I made a Google Doc that compiles excerpts from interviews where Nomura, his team & even Disney executives talk about everything that has to do with integrating Disney properties into Kingdom Hearts. From the process of adding characters & worlds into the game, to developmental decisions made by both Nomura & Disney such as specific requests, challenges with the guidelines & integration of the Disney identity into aspects of the series most people assume to be original. You can take a look at it here: The Collaborative History of Disney to the Development of Kingdom Hearts.

There are a lot of interesting excepts that I recommend checking out if you have the time & are interested in Disney's involvement in Nomura's decision making. But overall, after reading & compiling these interviews, I can confidently say that Disney, or at the very least Disney Japan & Disney Interative, are incredibly supportive of the series & are highly respectful to Nomura's vision with the Disney characters & his own original ideas. The developers have grown as creators with what they've learned from Disney & it's clear that they set out to create a fun, engaging "Disneyland-like" experience above all else. To the point where the franchise is only alive today due to the potential new Disney Properties Nomura wants to explore as new films & ideas are released over the years.

Despite the given guidelines, Disney knows how important Kingdom Hearts is to their brand. And both Disney & Square Enix only want their contributions to be as accurate & polished as it can be. Even though I'm not a big fan of Disney's corporate decisions, I'm grateful that they were the ones who initiated the creation of this franchise given how meaningful it has been to me over the years. And I'm very confident that moving forward, the franchise will be granted even more freedom with the Disney-owned properties they want to use in future KH entries.

Got my favorite KH quote tattooed today!

In KH2, why does Axel try to bring back Roxas after trying to eliminate him at the beginning?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:53 PM PST

Can someone explain to me why Axel suddenly changed from attempting to eliminate Roxas when they were in the digital Twilight Town, to trying to bring him back by turning Sora into a heartless for the majority of the game.

    Understanding the hate for KH3

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:28 PM PST

I think KH3 improved on everything it had before for a modern day game. I didn't understand how fans of the series came back and would bash it for being a disney movie when...the game was always that?

KH1 and KH2 were traveling to a disney world, completing a mini version of the movie plot, and then onto the next. As for the "disney movie" complaints. I think we can move on from the dubious dialogue/wonky cutscenes of the ps2 era's limitations. That would be outright confusing for a game that is supposed to be a conclusion of Sora's chapter in the franchise? Why would we stray from animating each character and not give them their actual voice actors? What was the alternative?

Then comes the DLC backlash. The original two games always had a day one release and a final mix release with added content. That means you bought the game twice for more content. Here they are only charging you for bonus content which will be added to the game you already have. This has been their marketing strategy always.

It felt like these people had on nostalgia lenses and had forgotten what any of these games were actually like or even played any of their spin-offs to understand.. is there a perspective I'm missing? It is obnoxious to see" fans"still rag on the comments section, till this day. At least everyone who is dragging Pokemon SW/SH are valid in their criticism. KH3 is absolutely stunning top to bottom and obviously polished. All critique for the game welcome.

Why tf do I do so little damage on the Neverland world?!

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:59 PM PST

I kid u not, currently at Neverland(I'm playing Aqua's story btw)and the damage Aqua does is so little that trying to kill 1 basic unversed will take me lmost a minute

So,I just ignore the unversed and got into the Vanitas boss fight and trying to take out 1 health bar of his took me like 5 mins. Not to mention,Vanitas is just 1 annoying boss to deal with(personal problem,I'm pretty sure no one else struggled fighting him except me)

Ffs,why the sudden difficulty spike. Why is BBS filled with annoying stuffs like this
