For those asking: Rom modding (the actual files) of 1.5, 2.5 and DDD will most likely be possible within the next weeks. RAM hacks are already 100% possible. As for 0.2 and KH3, it will probably take a little longer until the AES key is found. RAM hacks also possible already.

    KH 1.5 + 2.5 60 FPS issues still around?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 01:07 AM PDT

Are these issues with KH1 still around for the PC version? I recall something similar happening with Ys I & II Chronicles that made Dark Fact to be jankier at 60 frames.

its unstable. KH1's sephiroth's meteor attack can be faster than usual and the game apparently has sound problems.

    Edit: I found more.

It's just that several bosses (mostly the data bosses and one of Terra's attacks) are messed up by the shift to 60 fps. Data Vexen especially.

I wanna know if these persist in the PC version.

General impression: KH3 PC port is great, MoM is good 1.5+2.5 and 2.8 are quite poor.

The KH3 port is surprisingly pretty great. Easily one of Square's best PC ports. It is well optimised, has quite a few graphics options meaning people can customise it for a high or low end experience, and the framerate unlock seemingly doesn't mess with anything, and even in-engine cutscenes benefit from an unlocked framerate and look really great. While the quality of the port is expected for an Unreal Engine 4 game on PC, Square usually slacks on their PC ports so it's nice they actually did a good job here. The only issue I found is that my PS5 controller can get screwy if another controller ends up connecting to my computer, so be careful not to have multiple controllers connected as they will fight for priority.

MoM is based in the Unity engine, so it also should be expected to properly support the PC platform. The game doesn't have many graphics options but since the graphics are nowhere near as detailed as KH3, this is understandable. Surprisingly, the game actually properly supports a variable refresh rate and plays very smoothly with high refresh rates. I'm not an expert on the game, but the timings for the beats also seemed to hold up. I personally don't think this game really needed a PC port beyond just to make it more accessible to consumers of the PC platform, but it does it's job and has the nice bonus of high refresh rates so I'd say it's a success. A 30 FPS option is absent but the game shouldn't be difficult to run and it was designed for a locked 60 FPS originally anyway.

However, it's the collections where things get bad. I've seen a lot of people hype up the fact that the older titles have frame rate options, but sorry to say, this is partly a lie. What they did here for the older titles (KH1, Re:CoM, KH2, BBS, DDD) is that they simply interpolate a higher frame rate if you set their frame rate to anything above 60 FPS. This means all in-game animations are still running at 60 FPS, but a visual filter of sorts attempts to "fill in" frames between the real frames to make it look smoother. However, this effect works very poorly here, and just leads the game to look like it has a lot of ghosting and after images on everything. The easiest way to notice it is to swing your camera around wildly with the mouse, and the screen suddenly is full of ghosting. Some scenes look OK but others make the effect very obvious. KH1 also has it worse due to it's closer camera angle making it more pronounced. The games are still fine enough at 60 FPS as they always have been but it's really disappointing for them to even put this option in to deceive people. If you were only going to buy the older titles to play at high refresh rates, I would advise against purchasing if you already own the games on other platforms. PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, and the next gen console already ran the remastered games at native 4K 60 FPS, so you actually can't get more out of the games on PC until modding happens.

Besides this, I had a softlock when booting up KH1 once and it locked up my entire computer so I had to force power it off, and I've seen people reporting crashing and stuff in the various older titles too. Also, in my experience, the older titles don't seem to take my PS5 controller even if I run it through DS4Windows, but KH3, MoM, and 0.2 take it without any third party software.

0.2 is a weird case. TECHNICALLY, the port is as well optimised as KH3 by the looks of it, and looks and runs really well at 144 FPS, which is great for me on a high end rig...

However, in both 1.5+2.5 and 2.8, all games in the collections have a standardised PC settings menu. What this means is that 0.2 doesn't get the full graphics customisation suite that KH3, a game built on the exact same engine and framework, has. So while you can adjust resolution and frame rate (proper high refresh rate here, not interpolated), you cannot adjust or scale anything else. Don't like motion blur? Too bad, you're stuck with it. Are you just short of hitting your target frame rate, but are OK with reducing shadows or texture detail or LODs? No options for that. Even though KH3 has all of it.

Now, it may still be possible to adjust some of this via .ini files on your PC that all UE4 games have on PC, but you have to know what you're doing there and frankly, it's really unacceptable to not give 0.2 it's own Graphics settings menu separate from DDD, when it's on a completely different and more modern engine, and when KH3 has all of the settings 0.2 would want. Hopefully the patch this in later but I doubt it as a graphics settings menu in a UE4 game is a really basic thing that should be there at launch.

Just thought I'd throw out an unbiased take on this, as someone who is actually a QA tester myself. I can fully recommend the PC ports of MoM and KH3 to even repeat buyers, but the other titles need work, even if they will be playable for some, and they definitely aren't worth double dipping on if you own them on other platforms.
