Sora losing the Keyblade to Riku.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 09:23 PM PDT

I honestly feel that, as far as sad moments is concerned in Kingdom Hearts, I feel that Riku taking Sora's Keyblade is a lot more sad than some people may give it credit for. It's impact hits hard regardless if you started the series with KH1 or the other games.

The foreshadowing of Riku being able to wield the Keyblade was during Sora and Co. 2nd return to Traverse Town (if I'm not mistaken), he briefly messed around with it; and during that point, Maleficent was already doing and completing her work in manipulating Riku into believing Sora betrayed him and Kairi. Donald shooing him away under Sora's recommendation for a new recruit didn't help matters either.

Considering the fact that Donald was (originally) treating Sora as a means to an end to find Mickey, it makes this betrayal (however brief) worse. Not only Sora has loss his girlfriend-to-be and his home, his best friend has become a puppet to Maleficent and mostly Ansem's plan, and when he lost the Keyblade, his two other friends wasted almost no time leaving him in the dust. If not for Beast standing up for him, who knows what would have happened to Sora.

Sora had traveled throughout many worlds and met many people on his journey, soon to meet even more, Donald and Goofy has been the only companions he had since Destiny Islands was lost to the darkness. So imagine all of that hard work to save your friends go to waste the very moment you lost the Sword of plot advancement needed to fight the monsters that destroyed your home and the only reason why had any of them was because of the Keyblade. This makes the moment where the Demon Tide swallowed the Guardians of light even worse.

    • All of my strength came from them. They gave me all of it. Alone, I'm worthless. Sora (KH3)

The reason why I feel Sora lost the Keyblade was because, prior to this scene, Sora's self doubt was eating at him. After Neverland, where Riku was at his worst at that point and was the closet of saving Kairi (her body at least). Combined with potential implications of Riku's words eating at him as well, it would leave him emotionally vulnerable enough to lose the Keyblade. Remember that power comes from the heart. The moment the heart wavers, so does your powers. An off topic note: this is also foreshadowing that Kairi's heart was with him and how he would be saved after turning into a Heartless.

Speaking of Beast, aka the main reason Sora found the strength to push forward, prior to this scene, Beast mentioned how he got to the world of darkness. He just believed as hard as he could to find Belle; that's how he made it to Hollow Bastion, where she and the other Princesses of Hearts were. Beast had no friends for most of his life outside of his subordinates. His love for Belle is what allowed Beast to find her. After Sora loses practically everything, he was still willing to help the prince-turned-monster in spite of his despair (another showing of his spirit) with Beast giving this speech:

    • Why… why did you… you come here? I came to fight for Belle. And though I am on my own, I will fight. I won't leave without her. That's why I am here. Beast (KH1)

Beast gave this rousing speech to someone he only just met. Pretty significant for someone who's heart he rarely opens up only to is the person he's trying to save. After hearing those words, the young briefly-former Keyblade Wielder picks up the wooden sword from his Rival Turned Evil as he remembers what he has been fighting for up until this point (cue the Mega Man meme here). This also gives more impact to Sora's speech to Beast in KH2 after Xaldin stole his rose.

Keep in mind that Riku got his Keyblade from Terra's bequeathing ritual, Kairi accidentally touched Aqua's Keyblade and Sora had Ventus in his heart. So Sora has never had his own Keyblade for the longest time. The Keyblade moved to Sora simply because Riku gave himself up to darkness. It really shows how much the power of friendship is a strength and a weakness for Sora. Sora could have never had got has far as he did without these bonds. It wouldn't be much of a hero's journey otherwise.

What do all of you think about this scene overall and how it holds up in the Franchise?

In which game did the story go wrong for you?

For me, it was DDD. KH's story was never simple, but time travel was simply a big no for me. Unfortunately, KH3 wasn't able to turn this around.

    Your opinions?

    If Disney Bought Dreamworks

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 01:37 PM PDT

I'm not exactly all for Disney buying out every company there is, and becoming an even huger monopoly....

But if Disney were to buy dreamworks, it would open up some great opportunity for KH worlds:

How To Train Your Dragon would be great and of course the great one Shrek.

I know shrek is a big meme and that now, but I still think it could be incorporated into KH and be one of their best worlds, Shrek itself had some decent playstation games back in the days.
