    Just a thought as to why KH3's story felt lackluster to some people

    I was just thinking today about the different plots of the KH games and what makes single games stand out either in a good or a bad way. Kingdom Hearts story is often considered to be convoluted and that certainly is the case in some games. Still I often enjoy the feeling of being "lost" when playing a KH game. I don't want to instantly know everything, or what's going to happen.

    I've often seen KH3's story get critiqued for many reasons: Disney worlds didn't move the plot forward, lack of midpoint, bad pacing etc. These all in a way are true, but also things that exist in nearly every KH game. In KH2 the disney worlds didn't have any more importance (might have had even less) than in KH3. Pacing hasn't either been great in all of KH games.

    KH3 was also left in a bad spot storytelling wise. Basically when DDD ended there wasn't much to do and the story was laid out pretty clearly. Surely in the KH3 there were a few twists and turns, but it was always clear what KH3 would lead up to.

    That's kinda the problem that I had with KH3's story. The game lacked the mystery that other entries of the series had. First time playing through Re:Com was really interesting since I didn't have a clue at first of what was going on. KH1 is filled with mystery, all the way from Dive Into the Heart. Fighting the hooded man in Hollow Bastion, everything regarding Ansem and watching the intriguing secret ending. KH2 had many players confused at the beginning, and the story wasn't leading to a final battle in the same way that KH3 did. Also in KH2 there were the secret bosss fight with LW and again a weird secret ending.

    KH3 struggled for me since I knew where it was going. I still found the finale to be epic, and the final 4-5 hours were a great KH experience. Most interesting parts in the story to me were anything regarding Union Cross and later on Verum Rex. Remind will probably give us more about those things, and that's great for me. The best of KH games are a healthy mix of Disney worlds and interesting original story. Worst example of this might be Soras side of Re:Com where the KH story was interesting, but Disney worlds were completely irrelevant. I hope I made it clear what I tried to say, english isn't my first language.

    What are your thoughts about this?

    TL;DR KH3's lacked mystery. It was clear from the beginning where the game would lead up to. I was more interested in things that weren't directly connected to the Xehanort saga (Union cross, Verum Rex)

    Every time I watch Moana I can’t help but think of how well it would blend with Kingdom Hearts.

    I know I'm not the first person to think of it but a strange darkness that spreads from island to island? Monsters raising from the shadowy depths? A coconut tree that looks almost exactly like the one they share the paopu fruit on? I would love for them to fly to a familiar looking world only to find out its a past version of destiny islands. They would help Moana along the story and then as a reward Maui would raise the land that will one day be the destiny islands we know and love.
