    Kingdom Hearts cured my speech impediment

    Recently I had an assignment about writing a "This I believe". I decided to focus on the role that Kingdom Hearts played in my life and how it cured my speech impediment. Thought maybe some of y'all would get a kick out of it. Well here it is:

    This I Believe essay.

    I am a gamer. That's right; I said it. I wear the label proudly on my shoulder like the American flag that sits in my front yard. The reason I love video games so much is not just because they are fun to play, not just because of the music that plays in my head all the time, and not just because of the stories they tell and how emotional they are. All those parts of video games are very important to me and I love each of them dearly, but the biggest reason I love, and am grateful for video games in my life, is because they cured my speech impediment. To understand, I must tell you my story, and the part a particular video game has played in it. Which will forever be the most important video game I ever play in my life.

    I was viciously bullied as a kid in public school. Fellow students would pass out invitations for birthday parties and invite everyone but me. They would have Nerf gun wars at the park and not let me play with them. All the kids would stand in line to be picked for kickball and I would just be disregarded as if I wasn't standing there. This would often leave 11-year-old me with nothing but my PlayStation 2 to try and fill up my weekend. This was all because "I talked weird".

    As I played the games I loved, the satisfying loop of fighting enemies, watch a heartfelt and teary-eyed cutscene, and die at the same boss fight at the end of the level I could never beat as a child never got old. The characters were all so cool, so heroic, so loving to each other and the best of friends. I wanted to be like them, but there was no way I could. There was a big difference between me and the heroes in my game. They never got bullied because they talked weird.

    That is when it clicked. The characters in my game never get made fun of because they talk weird. So, I used my phone to record the scenes, and emulate the voices of the characters, record myself speaking, and compare them. I would do this for hours that never seemed to end. I wanted to sound like them, and no longer get made fun of for how I talked.

    After 3 months of dedication, careful pronunciation, lots of practice, I did it. It was finally over. I won.

    In the process of all the dedication I learned every line of dialogue in the game, from the title screen to the rolling credits. Stating, failing, and restating every line of voiced dialogue. Every line is still ingrained in my mind to this day. That game was Kingdom Hearts 2, the game that cured my speech impediment.

    It was finally gone. After going to speech therapy and having braces for years that did nothing for my speech. After what felt like gallons of tears, endless lonely weekends, and the same 3 words mocking me no matter where I went, it was gone. The thing that held me back, no longer tied down my tongue. I was no longer scared to raise my hand, have the right answer, but say it the wrong way. I was more like the heroes in the game I loved. Never again in my life did I ever hear "you talk weird". I had finally beaten the last boss at the last level.

    In KH4, I really hope Square adds more world interaction similar to KH1. There are so many hidden interactions in KH1, it really adds a lot of charm and is always so cool to discover something new.

    Although I think the worlds in KH3 are beautiful, and some worlds have hidden interactions, it's just like after a certain point there really aren't many left. It's something I loved about KH1, which is finding the littlest hidden details. There's so much charm to the clock tower door interactions or how in Atlantica there is the shortcut with the geyser. KH3 had some in the first few worlds but they seem to basically completely stop after like Tangled. Tangled has the optional interactions with Rapunzel, and Olympus has the Hercules action figures.

    In a way, I even felt like the "NPCs" were sometimes a bit lack luster. You go up to a barrel near them and perform a spin and that's basically it. They don't even seem to really interact much with Sora. It would be awesome if there were like side quests to do for the NPCs.

    I've been working with AwesomeDudeX90 on PSN to make a kingdom hearts game in PS4 Dreams. I joined the project to make things look more accurate, so here's our traverse town second district, still a work in progress

    Anyone know if Kingdom Hearts Re:coded is worth watching? How important is the plot to the overall franchise?

    I feel like skimming parts rather than watching it as a whole from the chapter menu.
