Heartless-centric fanfic: is it worth writing?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 07:34 PM PST

Heyo eyo I'm barely even a third of the way through the series but uh

well I have a fanfic/fancomic idea and I'm compelled to post about it :V

Also do note, I did at one point horrendously spoil myself by reading a good chunk of the wiki and then watching things out of order a bit that was an oops moment seriously OWIE-

Anyway, my idea revolves around writing something that focusses specifically on the Heartless. Not in like, an anti-form/Sora's heartless/might-as-well-be-human-Heartless sort of way, but in more of a xenofiction sort of way. Because of course, I got into Kingdom Hearts because I'd seen the Heartless around, really liked them, and then gotten curious about their source material :V And of course, in typical Inc fashion, I remain primarily fascinated by the generic enemy monsters :VVV

Currently I have three Heartless characters that I've been working on specifically for this hypothetical project- two vanilla soldiers, and one high soldier. They sort of operate like a flock of sheep and their sheepdog, with the high soldier taking on a protective role with regards to the other two Heartless.

Before I delve into detail about this, do you think that people would even be interested in reading a story wherein the main protagonists are otherwise generic Heartless (which are treated more like 'starfish aliens' than anything human-like), with the more familiar characters (i.e. Sora and friends) taking on more supporting roles?? Or am I the only person even remotely interested in this?

(I ask, because I have done a Lot of searching around for other stories of this nature, and found very, very few. Hence, I worry that investing dozens or hundreds of hours into an endeavor like this might end up just being a wasted effort. After all, what is the point in exporting the ideas I have in my mind into a tangible form others can perceive, if nobody else would be interested in partaking of it?)

    -------------------------------------

Wowee here we go big ol explanation time hnngg-

The story itself is about a pack of lesser Heartless who managed to survive after the events of the games thus far. Originally their group was much larger, however a run in with a keyblade wielder reduced that to just the three of them. None of these Heartless are 'special', I must note- they do not differ from others of their kind, other than perhaps in the length of time they have managed to stay alive for. The reason they survived is because one of them had the bright idea to hide instead of fight back, and brought whoever they could grab ahold of with them.

At the moment I am a little unsure how this will connect with the main cast of KH? However the option I'm considering right now involves Sora having a chat with Riku about that time Maleficent let him control some Heartless, and then having a Glow Brain Moment and pondering, 'Hey. Hold up. What if we did that again? If a kind person was in charge of the Heartless, could they command them to like, do good instead of evil?' (not sure how in-character any of this is but listen, the behavior of normal humans is nebulous to me and honestly harder than writing eldritch monsters :V If I do go through with this project, I will probably seek out some advisers to help in writing for the human characters)

Sora then proceeds to hunt down some Heartless and see if he can tap into a bit of his inner Darkness and assume control of them. (I'm sure you can imagine which trio of Heartless he finds for this :V ) It works? It's just that there's one problem- the Heartless are scared of him.

The stuff that follows this is sort of like what happens when a skittish stray dog is adopted, except it's not a dog, it's a funky monster with hAnDs, enough clever boi points to be taught to speak (don't ask me precisely how, I am still flailing around between 'chirping in morse' 'always carry a notepad' 'just use sign language' and 'just let them talk normally Inc' ), and a backstory that involves being literally manufactured as a tool of war.

Do note? The story will probably not involve any cannon-characters from the get-go; there will probably be a sizable 'prologue' period which focusses on the lives of the Heartless trio when they are on their own. I consider this important because I want them to be established as characters BEFORE they meet Sora and co.? Since they will be the main focus of the story, I'd want to give the audience time to grow attached to them before throwing in more familiar faces.

There is a LOT of (primarily evidence-based) headcannon nonsense that I could also ramble about??? However it is subject to a lot of change as I progress deeper into the series... So, if any of you would like to hear about that (because it does play a pretty big role in the backstory of the Heartless characters- not to mention all of the anatomical/behavioral stuff), please uhhhh let me know and I'll give you a 2-ton mountain of rambling :V

Also, please let me know if I should change the flair or delete the post outright; for all the time I've lurked around on reddit I... do not make a lot of posts :V
