[Kingdom Hearts Theory] [DISCUSSION] (Slightly Spoilery): The Keychains You Get Appear depending on the Situation of the game you're in.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 08:17 PM PST

I've had this long-going theory about how Keychains work in the Kingdom Hearts Series.Keep in mind, this theory is going into some Spoiler territory about the Keychains and Keyblades with each game and each world, so please bare it in mind and try to bare with me.

In the first game, Keychains are given as a tie to the memories you shared with that world. In KHFM, the Diamond Dust and One-Winged Angel Keychains are memories with those boss fights.

In Chain of Memories, the concept is still there, but the Keychains (cards) serve as memories tied to bonds with each floor's world. We assume that Sora forgets about Deep Jungle because it doesn't appear in Chain of Memories, but we all know it's because of legal reasons, so it's just been shoehorned into the series. As for Re:Chain of Memories, future game's cards are memories that are linked via save files, and are moreso visions of the future, since those Keychains (represented as cards for the present of Re:CoM) do not exist yet.

In 358/2 Days, we see that the Keychains (or Keyblades) are really grid-like panels that Roxas & Xion get, based on their existence as Nobodies. Each of the panels represent a different feeling that each of the Organization XIII members would have felt, if they were a Somebody. They are the missing feelings that each organization member wants to remember, and are only given them these as to give them a taste, a feeling of what it was like.

In BBS, we don't get keychains, but we are assumed we get them based upon what we remember or who we are as people, showing us who we we really are on the inside, as a sort of mirror as to who's influencing them rather than tied with memories with those around them. It's true that some Keychains are tied to memories, but some are tied more with who the character you're playing as, is as a person. It works on a Personal level. If Keychains really are tied to the person in question, then perhaps maybe the reason we get so many keychains is because they're really the memories tied to us. If any one person could get someone else's exact keychain, that would mean the keychains really are moreso tied with memories, when in reality, they're tied more with the person in question. In KHUX, we get them as gifts from people who show their appreciation for us, and the keychain (or Keyblade we are given) acts as a memory for when we were first or after completing that world.

In KH2, they moreso deliver the act of consequences given when we help someone figure out what's really going on; Mulan, we get her to realize she can still be with Shang as a woman, fighting alongside him, given permission to do so. On the 2nd visit, Beast's realization he has to protect the Rose in order for him to become human again. Timeless River, it's discovering what's important to the timeline as so in order to preserve it, explaining that rules really are "black and white", as explained with the "Monochrome" keychain. When visiting Ariel for the 4th time, the Mysterious Abyss is representative of what it's like to be tied with the Sea, and is further explored in the 5th song on the final visit.PoTC, it's Jack still being a Pirate, following what he feels is best to him. Agrabah, it's the ties to Jafar and the memories they all had when Iago was still helping Jafar, but is now reformed. The "Wishing Lamp" refers to Jafar, and reminds us that no matter who is inside the lamp, while the lamp can be used for good, it's more really how upon how the lamp is used, and serves as a reminder to "be careful what you wish for". Halloween Town, Jack comes face to face with several different choices as to how he wants to celebrate Christmas, while saying he's changed trying to explain he just wants to get Christmas Done and Performed Right. Santa explains that while what he's doing is nice, there are just certain jobs that certain people are best suited for, as all explained with the title of "Decisive Pumpkin". In Pride Lands, it's about how you act as king and decide what you want to do with how to rule the Pride Lands. It's as explained in the name of the Keychain you get for helping Simba, called the "Circle of Life", saying that Simba has to live in his father's footsteps and decide what is best for his home, the Pride Lands and Pride Rock. In Space Paranoids, "Photon Debugger" explains what each Program or User's role is in the system, and explains that Tron is neccessary in order to keep the system running in optimal performance, as he said himself he was a "security program", something to keep the System Ansem created safe. In Twilight Town, the Oathkeeper is a constant reminder of the promise that Sora made to Kairi, when he realizes what's missing while trying to figure out why Roxas is missing from Sora's Twilight Town, as opposed to the Digital Twilight Town. In Final Mix, Winner's Proof is a symbol of Sora's completion of the Mushroom XIII. Two Become One, is a symbolization of Roxas being Sora's Nobody, and explaining the two belong together. Oblivion, is a reminder of Sora's Promise to Riku to be with him and to find him, as to remain friends with him.

In Re:Coded, the keychains are all just data, given to Data Sora so he can progress to the next world. They're memories, but they're being hacked in so that Data Sora can keep the hurt at the end of the game.

In DDD, they're all just showing up... Like a Dream. They don't fully exist, but they exist in each dream.

In A Fragmentary Passage, Aqua only has one Keychain, as she has already abandoned her old Keyblade for Master Eraqus's keyblade, serving as a reminder to stay vigilant as a Master, given to her by Master Eraqus, but to remember the bonds she shares.

In KH3, they're all named to help Sora in his quest. They're still memories, but they're the bonds they all share together. Even moreso as memories, as shown by the Classic Tone keychain, showing that Sora still remembers his time in Timeless River.

In MoM, there's no Keyblades or keychains, just characters to play as and materials and songs to unlock to...well, I'd elaborate more, but the reddit specifically states no spoilers about current games being released.

So what does this all mean...? Well, we already know that the Keyblade changes form for each Keychain attached at the current time. This idea was dropped in the first game, but some gentle nods are still there in each of the games after that. Going further upon that, let's just say the keychains are a catalyst for memories in each game. Each game explores memories differently, so it only makes sense to tell a story about memories in each game. We also know that Each Keychain and Each Keychain is representative of a different wielder or master, and that removing a keychain reverts the keychain back to it's original wielder's base form, provided they haven't given up the base Keyblade in question.

So, it might be a cosmetic thing, or it could be something more. What're your thoughts on this? I'd like to explore this more with you guys.
