I hope the next KH games keep KH3's air-focused combat / A talk on aerial fights and 'floatiness'

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 07:24 PM PDT

I've been recently replaying some of the late game bosses and encounters over again while just trying to go wild with air combos and movement and this has honestly become some of the funnest combat moments I've had with the series thus far, which made me want to write up something about it.

At first back when the game came out, I really didn't like how floaty Sora was but with the remind combo modifiers it's become so much more enjoyable, which I think ties into an aspect of the Osaka Team's gameplay quirks that I never really liked until now and want to talk about. When it comes to BBS and DDD (never played Re:Coded though I have watched let's plays and know it improves the speed and flow of combos and commands), one of the biggest gripes I had with their combat was how slow and bad it felt to stay in the air and the slow forced combos, which made me think the idea of KH3's floaty combat was fundamentally flawed.

While base KH3 improved on that point with stuff like the ability to use items and do magic combos in the air, the base combos and the lack of cancelling made it still feel undesirable IMO. With KH3 in its current state however, it feels amazing and looks great to fight solely in the air IMO. If anything, my big complaint is that the other formchanges still feel really slow and the delayed keyblade swapping sometimes ruins the aerial combos when the enemies fall to the ground before I can get another hit in.

When I began the floor is lava runs, as I mentioned in that topic, Sora's numerous attack and movement options in the air and the adjustments they made to combat made fighting feel satisfying while still looking really cool, though another aspect I've come to learn and think about is the boss's viability in the air and whether they were really built for it.

Throughout the floor is lava fights, I saw how some bosses like Terranort and Data Xion aren't really built for the air and how it could allow you to completely avoid their attacks and/or not have any counter options against it. Then there were others that felt like they were practically built for the air like Data Xemnas and MX IMO, in how most if not all of their attacks followed your specific location even in the air, which I found myself enjoying the most.

I recently managed to beat Yozora in the air and his fight kinda strikes a middle ground between the two. Most of his attacks follow you into the air though some of them lose openings like the sequence of red lasers and the reticle slashes, and the second phase's blue reticle strikes are also unavoidable unless you get by them with a shotlock's i-frames. The first video I recorded of my victory somewhat shows that, and I recorded another version where I managed to beat him during the DM.

Doing that and refighting the late game bosses again, it really made me better appreciate the air combat of this game and where I think KH's combat could shine even more if they doubled down on that element and made bosses 'air-compatible' in a sense by having their attacks follow your precise location more often than just staying grounded. I don't think air combat is inherently flawed, but rather that it took until KH3 Remind before aerial combat truly felt better balanced and fleshed out enough to feel on par with the ground combat for the most part. I hope with future titles, they continue along this path since it's a really fun challenge IMO to stay in the air for these fights and it certainly looks sweet.

Sorry if this topic comes off as a bunch of rambling. I'm not exactly commenting on whether this makes for objectively good or bad combat design or if one approach is 'correct'; I just wanted to throw out my recent thoughts on the combat system, how much fun I've been having with this now, and how I hope they keep it going forward. I might add more to this later if I think of anything else, but besides that, feel free to post your thoughts on Osaka's aerial/floaty combat, whether you think it's fundamentally bad or can be improved, etc.

What Disney World/Square Enix World would you like to see?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 11:33 PM PDT

Personally, I would like a Treasure Planet, Atlantis, ENG, or a Midgar world. There isn't much representation from 2000s Disney, and all three of those would make great worlds. As for Midgar, it could continue the Cloud Vs. Sephiroth arc, whilst relating to FF7R.

I'm playing through the series for the first time since I was a kid, and I am absolutely loving it.

Few weeks ago I beat 1, for the first time, went through Chain of Memories and suddenly a wave of nostalgia in 2. Remembering bits and pieces from the game as a kid makes me so happy. I've had my physical copy of 2, since it was brand new, I haven't been able to play it for years, so finally being able to on my PC without an emulator is just the best.

Can't wait to go through Birth by Sleep eventually.

The keyblades in the Tron world (KH2) are surprisingly well detailed

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 05:20 AM PDT

I've been playing Kingdom Hearts 2 again and I've only now noticed how the keyblades all look different in the Tron world. It's not that big of a deal but I love that they didn't just put a blue glow on the keyblades (except the Kingdom Key for some reason) but instead they change the colours for all of them (probably,, can't remember and I don't have all the keyblades yet because I haven't gotten through the game yet). So yeah, not a big deal but I love going to the Tron world just to look at how cool the keyblades look

Most skilled Keyblade Wielder? (Possible Spoilers)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 06:18 PM PDT

So, who do you think is the most skilled Keyblade Wielder? I don't think "most skilled" and "most powerful" are the same, by the way.

In my opinion, it has to be Terra. Let me explain:

    1. His mastery of the keyblade is unparelled, his skillset is incredible versatile. He can turn his keyblade into so many different things, a gun, a whip. Sora can use different forms but he nor Riku have ever demonstrated such mastery of their keyblades to ever use them in that fashion, plus Terra has access to tons of different forms as well.
    2. He was able to defeat Terra-Xehanort while just a hunk of walking armor, beating him not only once but stalemating him afterward. This is amazing considering that Terranort had Xehanort's experience, power, and keyblade matched with Terra's young body and power. The fact he was able to fight with him on equal footing is nothing short of amazing.
    3. He is the only one among his group where melee combat is his main thing. All his moves revolve around melee combat and using his keyblade to fight.

Sora, Aqua, Riku, Mickey, all great wielders, but I still don't think in terms of pure skill, they can match Terra.
