A small critique on DDD and BBS’s combat system Posted: 17 Jul 2021 10:03 PM PDT I REALLY like the deck command system for the record and love almost everything about the styles in BBS and flow motion in DDD. What kills me is that when you finally acquire a really strong command - let's say Sonic Blade - and you fight a boss and they just interrupt it. This was an especially big problem in DDD. Like I understand I shouldn't be invincible when doing a command like Sonic Blade but at the very least can I take damage without having to be interrupted? It would expand my arsenal instantly if far more of my deck wasn't immediately rendered useless. Like many I had to succumb to the supremacy of Balloonga to defeat the gauntlet of bosses at the end of DDD as Riku. All those sick commands I worked so hard for we're pretty useless against a REAL boss. It kind of immediately killed my motivation to want to unlock every command when I realized they could all be so easily interrupted in like 0.2 seconds. [link] [comments] | ||

Posted: 17 Jul 2021 09:44 PM PDT So for the dive into the heart the begining, what do I do to start, the power I choose and give one up(sword, shield or staff) and the rate I level up(fast first 50 slow after, consistant,or slow 1-50 and fast after)there are so much I don't know what to choose so if anyone could help it would be nice cause I could not find a good way to do it before. A (somewhat) critical analysis of final bosses throughout the series (Major Spoilers!!!) (Long) Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:41 PM PDT Okay seriously, the entire basis of this post is so filled with spoilers it's not even funny. If there are games in this series that you haven't played, please, for the love of god, come back to this post later! Go experience these bosses and reveals for yourself before coming to this post. That out of the way, I wanted to give my thoughts on (most of) the final bosses in the series and begin a discussion about what the community finds to make for good and poor boss mechanics. For my general perspective, I tend to look at final bosses as a final exam for the game. They're at their best when they're able to test the player's skill and ability with all the tools the game has given to them throughout the journey. Please give your thoughts on the bosses to keep the conversation going. Let's get started. With a couple exceptions, most of these fights were fought on their highest difficulty available. KH1: Ooh boy... this ended up kinda rough. The first couple encounters are perfectly fine. The beach and crater Ansem fights work well as primers and an advanced skill check respectively. They introduce you to the fight and then expand Ansem's move list while taking party members away. All in all, these two fights are solid. Then the Darkside fight acts as a great way to show player progression since the start of the game. My issues come in once we get to the World of Chaos. These fights, in my opinion all show off the growing pains that square was experiencing while making KH1. Were this a traditional Final Fantasy with a 2/2.5d art style and turn based combat, this would be a perfectly acceptable final boss. But it really does not translate well to a 3d real time combat system at all. It feels like a major letdown to go through the entire game building up this impressive move arsenal to have so much of it stripped away during the final fight because it's done with the flying system. If I were being ideal, these fights could have stayed if we just had one more fight. If we had a 1 on 1 duel with Ansem in front of the Door to Darkness (maybe with him teasing a keyblade like No Name) we likely would have had a very satisfying final fight to end the series. I'm glad to say though, final boss design improved dramatically from here. Chain of Memories: This is gonna be quicker because I'm not as well versed in Chain or ReChain. Marluxia is fine. His music is absolutely fantastic and his two major fights offer up both the large monster and more personal 1v1 style experience. Nothing crazy in either direction but a solid fight. I, admittedly don't have that much fun in the chain style of gameplay and may not appreciate the fight as much as I possibly could. People who have played Chain more than 1 time please share your thoughts. KH2: Oh baby they learned. By the time we get here, most of my issues from KH1 have been solved. We have a variety of encounters that test our ability to handle a multitude of different combat scenarios. From mob fights. to larger and more stationary bosses, to that final duel style fight that I crave. While it's not my favorite encounter, I can really appreciate that dragon Xemnas was a test of our gummi gameplay, a design choice that has sadly not returned. Even throne Xemnas, which I would call my least favorite fight in this gauntlet has some really cool flavor by referencing each of the other org members fought in the base game. It doesn't save that fight from getting a bit stale, but it's still cool. And I think everyone can agree that final Xemnas is a damn near perfect fight. From the excellent rhythm of his moves to the amazing reaction command sequence at the end, it's really hard to find fault with this fight. Final mix made it even better by allowing a drive form to be used (which is big considering that's THE signature mechanic of KH2 combat). Days: I've only actually played through Days once and that was over 10 years ago. The concepts of Xion and Riku as the final fights are really cool. If memory serves, these fights are held back more by the game's overall mechanics as opposed to specific boss desing. BBS: I want to like these fights... I really do. Things like fighting Terranort as the Lingering will or fighting Vanitas in Ven's heart while he has the X-blade are incredibly cool concepts. But this is a huge case where the larger game mechanics tank these fights (in my opinion). Things like the absolute lack of hit stagger to humanoid enemies and the seemingly random times that bosses can break out of attacks just kill the fun factor of these fights. When most random players have to resort to block-retaliation spam or surge spam to even get through these fights, you haven't created a fun experience. Instead, these fights quickly turn in to frustrating/boring slogs that highlight the worst of the mechanical design that permeates BBS. Coded: This is the only KH game that I have not actually played in any capacity, I've only watched. As such I just don't have opinions on the final fights... I really need to play this. DDD: This is more or less what I said about BBS. There are really cool fight concepts here (Dark Armored Ven is so cool!) But much of the issues that plagued BBS exist here too. And they amount to the same problems with bosses. These could have been great fights with just a few tweaks to how humanoid bosses function and to command balancing. 0.2: Demon Tide is a cool fight with amazing music. But some of the damage values feel a little skewed when playing on crit. Maybe I just went in super under leveled when I did my crit run, but it felt like it took ages to significantly damage this thing. This was made worse by the fact that the grand magic granted by situation commands was not the most consistent at this point. The couple times a Demon Tide is fought in KH3, you can tell they tweaked systems for the better because it feels like night and day between the games. KH3: We're back baby! We had a kinda rough go at it for while, but I absolutely love these fights. I'll start by just quickly saying, I'm a huge fan of Triplenort. That fight is a lot of fun and has some incredible music. Word of caution though, if you're just playing casually, this fight will hurt if you're under leveled. I got to this fight at like 36 and was stuck on it for so long (remember this). It's nothing on proud though. When we get to the real Nort, the cool factor keeps going. The armored vessels is a really cool, if quick experience that gives us one last go with the other vessels in, what I found to be, a really entertaining fashion. Goatnort is probably the weakest fight of this set but I definitely would not call it bad by any means. It's a cool way to implement the different types of movement tech throughout the game without having any of them overstay their welcome. The fact that it feels like we were underwater for just enough time is commendable in and of itself. And then Final Xheanort is, by my estimation, the closes we have come to final boss perfection in the series. While it's on the easier side, even on crit this was nothing compared to triplenort, it still provides a satisfying but fair challenge. On top of that, and I can't state this enough, every single tool that the player has been given up to this point is usable in the fight. You can transform your keyblade, you can summon, you can attraction, you can do anything possible in this fight. It's a true test of all of the players skills and learning throughout the game, which is just so satisfying. Add in some amazing set pieces like his DM, the forced rage form, and coming back from death, and you have what I consider to be the best final boss this series has to offer. These are just my thoughts, I wanna keep talking about this so please keep the conversation going in the replys. Can't wait to discuss these fights with you guys. May your hearts be your guiding keys. [link] [comments] |
