It's a small scene but I wish they added this in the game.

Can't quite put my finger on what, but I've always felt like Sora's personality changed after KH1... thoughts?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 05:13 AM PDT

The first Kingdom Hearts is honestly probably one of my personal Top 10 Games of All Time. The combat could be a little wonky at times, but it just nailed everything else.

More than just "the story", though, is I fell in love with the characters in KH1. To me, Sora and Riku were just these totally believable friends, but also rivals (it really felt like both were interested in Kairi; kind of bummed they never explored that). Kairi seemed a little more "sassy", at least in the VERY brief interactions you got with her. To me, Ansem was still just a great villain, before they started retconning him as... I'm honestly not even sure anymore (the Heartless form of an adult Xehanort?).

Now for Riku, I actually felt like they did a great job keeping his character fairly consistent, in terms of personality. I still hate his soccer-mom haircut, and I feel like he looks sort of unrecognizable in KH3 (being tanner, and his features less sharp), but it still all feels like Riku.

Sora, though... honestly, I feel like Sora is kind of inconsistent.

In KH1, he was a generally upbeat kid, but he also seemed pretty emotionally intelligent. You could tell that things weighed on him, that he had concerns, he took things seriously. But come KH2, he felt radically different; he definitely seemed more confident, but in a way, he also seemed less emotional. And when it came to dealing with the Organization members, he was downright ruthless.

KH3's Sora changes even more, to being a super nice guy, but to the point he honestly feels sort of flimsy as a character. He doesn't seem like he takes anything seriously, he feels surprisingly similar to Goku from Dragon Ball Super. The only time he seems to show any emotion, was from a surprisingly quick shift near the end of the game; GREAT voice-acting, but I sort of taken aback, like "wait, NOW you're going to be all depressed and abandon all hope? did somebody flip a switch in his brain suddenly?"

Now, I remember enjoying KH2 a lot, but in fairness I was a teenager at the time, so I think KH2 just closer matched the aesthetic I was into more. But KH3, man that was a slog for me to get through. And honestly, I just didn't really care about Sora or really any of the cast, because they all felt so shallow and empty by comparison.

I dunno. I think what really made KH1 stand the test of time -- at least for me -- was just how relatable Sora was. Putting on a happy face, but clearly having those insecurities like having feelings for Kairi, feeling inferior to Riku (and having those feelings reinforced when it turned out Riku was the Keyblade's chosen one), it made him seem like an actual person. In KH3, he just feels like "generic anime hero", instead of maintaining that emotional intelligence.

But I dunno. Maybe there's something else at play? Maybe there are subtle differences you guys have noticed that I haven't?

Which game has the best opening music video?

I know that Simple and Clean was used in multiple openers for the games. So if you feel one of the side story games does a better job with it, put it down in the comments.

    Newbie here

So my wife got me a PS5 (first Sony Playstation ever). Until a month ago, the only KH game I'd played was recorded. So I got the "story so far" edition and KH3. My mind is blown. My family is sick of hearing me talk about how everyone could have a heartless and a nobody. I played through 1, 2, watched KH Card Game on YouTube. Finished Sora's story on 365/2 and just blown away with how deep the story went and how amazingly they tied all the stories together. I was worried I'd get bored, and then they did it: they opened up a prequel with Ven, Aqua and Terra, and I'm like how refreshing, and the deck system is similar the the DS version a decade ago! So far. I've put in about 120 hours and I'm loving it. Focus points: Riku is kind of the hero, yeah? I can't wait to see what happens at the end with the keyboard wielders club...

I'm not looking for spoilers, just wanted to express how after 20 years, the story holds up.
