Aqua is a very compelling character

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 06:07 PM PST

Aqua is considered by most to be the best female character of the series, as the first woman with combat capabilities on-par with the men, and she is instrumental in stopping the villains of Birth By Sleep. However, Aqua's competence isn't what makes her interesting to me. What makes her interesting to me is that she isn't a Mary Sue.

She actually has a lot of character flaws. She doesn't see the benefit in darkness and sees it as nothing more than a tool of destruction. She was going to kill Lady Tremaine and her daughters for having darkness within them before they even committed a crime until the Fairy Godmother stopped her. Her hatred of darkness causes her to not put much faith in her friend Terra.

She's a Keyblade Master and this puts a large amount of pressure on her. She has to choose between her duties and her friends. Her first assignment as a master involves spying on one of her friends for their teacher and she quickly finds that her new rank is pushing both Terra and Ventus away from her. Though Aqua cares deeply for Terra and Ven, her desire to protect them comes off as her treating them like children, with her trying to send Ven to his room and calling Terra a "boy".

Aqua is a skilled fighter but she actually has the highest record of getting rescued. While she did stop the villains of BBS, it was essentially a pyrrhic victory. She wasn't able to save her friends and got trapped in the Realm of Darkness for a long time. The most interesting thing is that even though she escaped the Realm of Darkness, she has traumatic experiences from being trapped there for so long causing her to lose the will to fight the Demon Tide. Aqua is a powerful keyblade wielder but she's still a person and not some hardened warrior.

There is Aqua's biggest character flaw…refusing help from others. Even in III, after more than a decade of suffering, Aqua still can't fully shake the thought that she does not have to do everything by herself. When she confronts Vanitas in the Land of Departure, she casts a wall so Sora, Donald, and Goofy cannot interfere with her fight against him, which she considers personal. She nearly gets killed by Vanitas as a result. Tellingly, when she tries to do it again in Keyblade Graveyard, when she tells the others to go ahead while she fights the army of Heartless and Nobodies alone, Ventus and Kairi shoot her idea down, stating that this will only get her killed.

When you think about it, Aqua seems to want to be a Mary Sue. Someone who is completely flawless and does everything on her own. She doesn't do this to be superior but rather to protect those she cares about which actually does more harm than good in the long run. Aqua knows she has limitations but she doesn't care as long as her loved ones are safe. Despite all these flaws, Aqua is still a good person. She has a strong sense of justice and is willing to put her life on the line for people she barely knows.

Congrats to Nomura for making a badass female character without making her a Mary Sue. If Disney took notes from Aqua, then the remake version of Mulan would have been a more interesting character.
