[Birth By Sleep] Did Terra actually do anything wrong? (Rant)

    Posted: 19 Jun 2020 10:07 PM PDT

I'm playing through the entire series in order and I'm on BBS. I picked Terra first and just finished his story on Proud mode. I understand that I'm not supposed to understand everything until I play through Ventus's story, Aqua's story, and the Final Episode in that order. But I got the feeling that the writers wanted me to see Terra as a cautionary tale of what can happen if you surrender yourself to the darkness.

But honestly, I think all his actions were justified and actually show that he was a good person throughout the entire adventure. First he fails the Mark of Mastery while Aqua passes, but he doesn't let that get him down. He instead takes it as a learning experience and still tries to stay loyal to Master Eraqus. Then he learns that Master Eraqus sent Aqua to spy on him, and that pissed him off. But who wouldn't be pissed off by that? He got sent on a mission from his master and his master secretly sent his best friend to spy on him during it. That would feel like a major breach of trust from two people who you trust most.

Now we see Master Xehanort telling Terra that he will take him under his wing. I mean, you failed the exam under your first master and that same master clearly doesn't trust you and now you're getting an offer to be the apprentice of another master? Why wouldn't he do that? It's not like he had any reason to believe yet that Xehanort was evil. Then he learns that the Unversed (which I really hope somehow evolves into Heartless or something later down the grand storyline) are attacking all of the worlds because Xehanort made a mistake by taking all of the darkness out of Ventus's heart, thus creating Vanitas (which we as the viewer know that this was not a mistake). So Terra still tries to do the right thing and track down Vanitas to take him out and get rid of all the Unversed.

Then the part where he kills Master Eraqus was something that I felt like he got really screwed on. At this point, he still is distrusting of Master Eraqus for sending Aqua to spy on him and still is trying to see Master Xehanort for a good person. So he listens to Xehanort and returns home only to see Eraqus about to kill Ventus. Terra being the great person that he is decided to defend his friend and stand up to his former master. He literally defended someone who he cared about from someone else who he saw that was about to exhibit one of the darkest acts a person can commit. Finally he tries to stop Master Xehanort after he ordered Vanitas to kill Ventus and Aqua. Of course he was going to be angry from all this that happened!

I get that I still have two more stories and an epilogue to play through to fully understand what's going on, but I just got this vibe that I wasn't supposed to like Terra or see him as a model person. I also get the feeling that I'm supposed to see Terra as the person who made a mistake. The reality is though that Terra got screwed over at every single point and still tried to do the right thing. I honestly don't think he made any mistakes and instead was just the victim of manipulation and unfortunate circumstances.

Anyway, tomorrow I'll start Ventus's story. The small parts of him during Terra's story was super interesting and I feel like the voice actor for Terra really sells the "innocent but scrappy kid" vibe.

TL;DR: Terra did nothing wrong in my opinion (only from seeing his story)

KH3 had a lot of mature & poignant scenes. It was able to balance all of the fun & dark moments just as well as its predecessors did.

Just beat Data Roxas for the very first time, as you can see it was on critical and my mom got mad at me for screaming after I beat him XD

I always thought Kingdom Hearts titles were confusing, and kinda gaudy. I redesigned them to something a little more streamlined.

Love the lore, miss the simpler storytelling style of the older games though
