    Measuring Trio Member Screentime Across the Series

    Hi there.

    I made a post to this effect a while back, but I've been spending the past like month or so going through the games and essentially measuring the screen time of each of the Trio members across the story. This started because I'm one of those people who was deeply unsatisfied with how they handled Kairi overall (IE they don't let her do nothin) and I wanted to see how much screen time she actually gets, being a main character.

    This expanded because I wanted to look at comparisons between characters and here we are. Anyway, I'll be making the data set that I end up with available once I'm finished but here are my findings so far.

    I'm working with 46:57:11. That's 46 hours, 57 minutes, and 11 seconds of cutscenes.

    I'll give the full explanation of the metric once I'm finished, but the quick version is that once an iteration of a character shows up in the scene, the timer starts. When they either definitively leave the scene or the scene ends, the timer stops.

    A iteration of a character is a version of that character that doesn't hold a specific identity aside from that character (Roxas and Namine are separate from Sora and Kairi). This is a terrible definition and I know it, but this game doesn't make it easy.

    A character who is controlling another character's body or purposefully making themselves look like another character counts as the true identity (Ansem controlling Riku in KH 1 counts as Ansem, not Riku)

    If the character has a vision of another character, it counts even if its not real (Sora seeing Kairi's ghost from time to time across KH1)

    For the purpose of simplicity, DataSora is Sora, DataRiku is Riku, etc.

    As of right now, I have time fully measured for Kairi, Xion, and Namine. After them I decided to bite the bullet and do all of Sora and that's taking about as long as you would expect. For Sora I still have Dream Drop, 0.2, and KH3 to do. Current times and percentages are as follows:

    • Kairi: 1:52:06 or 3.98% of the series overall.
    • Namine: 1:14:39 or 2.65%
    • Xion: 1:12:28 or 2.65%
    • Sora (As of KH1 through Re:coded): 16:14:09 or 34.75%

    Observations: Because data must be interpreted to mean anything.

    Kairi's main three appearances are in KH1, 2, and 3, with her "spinoff" (for lack of a better term) appearances never passing six minutes.

    Xion and Namine, despite debuting after Kairi, and mainly appearing in fewer, much shorter games, still manage to reach above 2/3 her screen time.

    Among the three Kairi-or-Kairi-adjacent characters, Xion has by far the highest single-game screen time at 59:48 in Days (Kairi: 39:32 in KH2, Namine: 39:24 in CoM). This is likely due to her role as a much more active character than either of the other two.

    I'm currently taking bets on the multiplier we need to add to Kairi's time before we get to Sora's. We're currently at a little over 8.5 Kairis right now. My bet is 14.

    I threw Re:coded's in the trash way too soon. The more personal interactions Sora's able to have with Disney characters in that game creates some really sweet moments for him and the melancholy tone of the Castle Oblivion story tone is really compelling.

    The focus on interpersonal narratives is probably the strongest in Days, even over BBS for me. The tragedy and hardship that pretty much every character in that story has to deal with breaks my heart in the best of ways.

    As I weigh up the pros and cons of freeing up space to fully download KHUX (pro - get more of the storyline; con - no more unnecessary screen shots and random AMVs), can we just appreciate how ADORABLE the chibis are in Eraqus and Xehanort‘s story?! And, also, how sassy they get from time to time?

    Torn between buying MoM on PS4 or Switch

    At this point in my life, I own a physical copy of each Vanilla KH game and their respected Remasters. (outside of the original Re:Coded). I bought both the PSP and 3DS solely for BBS and DDD. I've had a Switch since 2018 and it's become my system of choice. When MoM was initially announced on the Switch I was ecstatic to be able to play a KH game wherever and whenever I want again. However I also understand the limitations of the Switch compared to the PS4/Xbox. But the multiplayer options on the Switch intrigue me (not so much the online part, mainly be able to play rounds with friends). I'm hoping this game launches the previous KH titles onto the Switch (Although that just means I have more games to buy lol). But I am torn about whether I want the version that features multiplayer or the version that will most likely be more polished. But I could also be mistaken about the multiplayer aspect. Do you plan on grabbing MoM on Switch? PS4? Xbox? What is making your decision?

I would post the ref for the character here, but I've had issues with people stealing art before, so I'll share it privately.
