Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory In A Nutshell

    Slow day at work

Melody of Memory will have its own show at Tokyo Game Show, Tetsuya Nomura and Yoko Shimomura will be there (Also, MoM appears to have a co-director?)

That .2% drop chance for wizard relic wasnt very simple and clean of Nomura

Am I the only one who gets some deep form of satisfaction from Square's footstep sounds?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:23 PM PDT

I've recently been playing FFX, and can't help but to notice the sounds they make when they walk. I love this sound. Like, a lot.

To preface, I found out about this sound from Kingdom Hearts. I'm not big on ASMR or other similar content either. That being said though, I think there's definitely something to Square's footsteps.

For those who haven't noticed, Square's games all have these deep clompy footsteps. It's not as pronounced in other games as it is in KH, but it's there. I don't know what it is, but there's something about this particular sound that just hits right. It's not overly detailed but it's not flat either, there's a little bit of dynamic jingling and rattling that's specific to each character, making their footsteps stand on their own as an identifier. It's just enough to be a realistic sound without being overbearing and out of place.

Then there's the most subtle aspects to it. Walking on wood? It'll be slightly more "damp" and echo-y. Walking on concrete? It'll sound denser, more solid. Walking on gravel/cobbles? It'll be a little crunchier. Grass, snow, cloth... it all sounds different, but still very uniform.

It's an amazing piece of sound design and I love it.

358/2 Days was the first KH game I played at around 9 years old and I found it to be incredibly dark and somber.

Don't get me wrong I still love the series even after all the nobody stuff got retconned and death is essentially meaningless now, but I'll never forget how like shockingly dark Days was to me when I was younger and I kind of couldn't believe that they put such sad and philosophical themes in a game that I assumed was for kids because of all the Disney characters. I'll never forget how after the Castle Oblivion stuff half of the organization was just like dead and gone. And people like Xigbar made it a point to constantly reiterate to Roxas that they were dead and gone with no hope of them coming back. Then of course there was the realization that the dusks you had leadership over were just like lesser, devolved versions of nobodies and they were once people too, the whole not having a heart thing, and then the game ending with a wonderful friendship breaking apart and one of your best friends dying in your arms. I feel like this game was the first thing to ever make me question my own purpose in the world, and moral ambiguity, and identity. Back when we really thought nobodies vanished and were gone for good, Days was hella dark you guys. Kind of miss when consequences felt serious and weighty like with Days and BBS. I still love the games but I hope they're able to still make things feel consequential and weighty in the future instead of just having everyone come back to life all the time. I'd like for them to introduce like real, final death into the series somehow but I feel like it's too late for that at this point.

    So anyone else annoyed?

Is it me or is it weird that you can get the switch version of MoM on squares store, the Nintendo e shop, and places like game stop; but the ps4 version (which has a pre order theme if you get it digitally on your ps4) is only available on squares store? Like is that odd to me since the trakier dropped a few days ago.
