    The focus on trios is limiting characters interaction

    TLDR; In KH3, when all the main characters finally meet, we could have had a lot of potential interactions that we didn't have, because the characters were "stuck" in their own trio. I hope that going forward, the series will allow characters to interact more with other characters that are not already part of their group of friends.

    Hear me out. I enjoyed KH3 a lot but this is something that has been bugging me for a while.

    I love the trios as much as anyone else and I was looking forward to seeing RAX and TAV reunion in KH3. I was also looking forward to seeing all the main characters finally meet and interact with each other.

    There was so much potential for so many good characters interactions: Terra and Riku, Aqua and Kairi, Sora and Ven finally meeting and interact with each other; Lea and Kairi being friends; Sora and Roxas finally talking face to face; Naminé and Roxas finally being able to talk and be friends, and more.

    We got some of the interactions I just wrote, but my problem is that as soon as the trios got reunited, they could barely interact with anyone else besides members of their trios. At some point, they looked like they didn't even care about people who were not part of their trio.

    Let's make some examples:

    • We see Axel/Lea being friends with Kairi for the first part of the game. They train together and they even go as far as protecting each other in KG. When Roxas and Xion are back though, Axel completely forgets about Kairi's existence.
    • Sora spend the whole game trying to find a way to bring Roxas back. Sora showed many times how much he cares about Roxas, and I was expecting them to say something to each other when Roxas was finally saved. Instead, the only people Roxas was allowed to interact with were Axel and Xion, and he barely said anything to Sora (or anyone else, for that matter).
    • Similar as above, Hayner, Pence and Olette tried their best to help Roxas but we never see their reunion, only a clip in the end where they eat ice cream together.
    • Despite the supposed special connection between Sora and Ven they barely talk with each other during the game.
    • Besides Sora, no one cared at all about Xehanort killing Kairi. They should have at least been sad/worried about one of their teammates being kidnapped and apparently killed. At least Axel and Aqua should have cared (even if, to be fair, Riku didn't seem to care much either so this is not only a trio related problem).
    • Naminé didn't get to interact with anyone because she's not part of any trio. We know that the people who care the most about her are Kairi, Sora and Roxas (Kairi and Sora both want to bring her back and Roxas was shown to miss Naminé multiple times during the game). I understand that Sora and Kairi were not there (even if we saw in ReMind that they actually were), but she didn't even get to interact with Roxas at all. They even promised to talk about everything in KH2, but don't even look at each other in the ending.
    • Despite their similarities, Roxas and Ven barely talked with each other and don't even appear that much surprised when they meet someone who look exactly like them.
    • Terra and Riku didn't even talk during KH3, but this one was at least corrected in ReMind.

    Besides the very ending (when they're on the beach), even when all the GoL are together they look visually separated from each other with RAX and TAV in opposite sides and Riku&Mickey in the middle.

    I really liked the scene where they are at the beach all together and the brief exchange during the group fight in ReMind, but I think we should have gotten more. KH3 was the big finale of the Xehanort Saga with all the guardians finally together after years, so I was expecting a little more characters interaction. The trios scenes were good, but I felt like the characters were stuck in their own trio and could not interact with anyone else.

    I really hope that in future games we will move on from the concept of trios and we will see the characters being friends and interacting with different characters. I hope that Kairi going to train with Aqua, and adding Isa and Naminé to the Sea Salt Trio are all steps in this direction.
