I have seen some very positive and some very negative reviews of KH3, but as a long time fan I knew I could not skip this game. I am about 30 hours in and my love for this game continues to grow.

I think Roxas's ending in Kingdom Hearts 2 was a perfect conclusion to his character

    Posted: 31 May 2020 06:14 AM PDT

I'm a huge Roxas fan. Kingdom Hearts 2 was actually my first KH game, so Roxas was my first protagonist and in my kid brain at the time he was always the real hero of the games.

Honestly, his arc in Kingdom Hearts 2 is such a bittersweet (mostly bitter) conclusive thing that I think could have honestly just ended there. We are hit constantly with the notion that Sora and Roxas simply can't coexist as they are pretty much the same person (body?). It isn't really fair to Roxas though, I mean, isn't he just as much of a person as Sora is? Why is Sora the one that gets to exist? The thing about it is it's not fair, at all. But Roxas and Namine accept their place as nobodies and return to their somebody's, not necessarily "dying", but being able to live on inside of them. I love this ending, because even though I'm sure they both have their reservations about it, they largely made peace with the situation.

I really just don't like how they handled Roxas's return in KH3. For starters it didn't really seem like the characters had to work for it or sacrifice anything. Sure, I understand that Zexion and his squad were probably working their ass off day and night to figure out what to do. I'm talking narratively here. I feel like none of the actual main characters really had to put in any effort or go through something. We just see how sad Sora is about Roxas not being his own person, and then the research gets offscreened and at the end of the game Roxas shows up again. It feels completely hollow, because previously Roxas existence was treated as a huge deal, and all the struggles that came with it. And in this game, ultimately what brought him back was wanting it really hard, which kinda sucks imo.

Even though I think that Kingdom Hearts 2 should have been the start and end of Roxas's character, I'm not completely against the idea of Roxas eventually coming back. I just wish it would have some more weight behind it. It shocked me because this guy is my favorite person in Kingdom Hearts, but I wasn't really hyped when he came back. The fact that he just instant transmissioned out of nowhere was just dumb to me.

I'm interested to hear what others think. As far as I know, this isn't a very popular opinion, so don't drag me too hard, lol

And this isn't supposed to be a kH3 sUucKs post, overall I thought the game was awesome.
